Head of the Meadow Trail

Bike/walk trail between two beaches

June, 2024 by andrix

I decided to bike this trail just to see if there was a nice plus that would offset its shortness. Alas, there was not. Yes, the surface was excellent but the entire way high brush prevented any sighting of the surrounding dunes, ocean or potential wildlife. I was there at high tide so could not verify the existence of a visible 1872 shipwreck at low tide near one of the beaches.

Nauset Trail

Trail from National Park visitors center to coast

June, 2024 by andrix

Surprising number of hills but surface is pretty even with roots/upheavals in only a few spots. Hard to get too excited about such a short (3 mile r/t) trail with no real scenery or wildlife standouts.

Old Colony Rail Trail

Update from review 2 years ago

June, 2024 by andrix

Started in Brewster on the Cape Cod Rail Trail and 4 miles south picked up the connecting Old Colony trail into Chatham. This time I plotted the entire route on the Map My Ride app since navigating Chatham can be confusing once the rail trail ends. This time was no exception with 2 different road closings along the way. My wife likes looking around the downtown, the lighthouse and views at the southern tip is worth the trip and - if you want to see seals - further up Shore Road is the Chatham Pier Fish Market. There were 50+ there today putting on quite a show.

Shining Sea Bikeway

Beautiful trail

June, 2024 by andrix

All the previous posts are right on so I won't duplicate. Here's an add: Pie in the Sky restaurant is excellent for sandwiches, wraps, cookies, etc. But wherever you purchase, get takeout and, if nice wx, go down Water St. a few blocks and enjoy the park with benches and views, typically few people and - of course - your meal.

Mattapoisett Rail Trail

Most scenic trail in MA

May, 2024 by bow_laker

The Mattapoisett Rail Trail goes along the ocean and over marshland. It is absolutely beautiful. Although short, it seamlessly merges into the Fairhaven Rail Trail almost out to Fort Phoenix. Highly recommended.

Hanover Branch Rail Trail

great

Trail is well maintained and great for walking/running or biking. It’s all paved and cuts across residential areas of Rockland and Abington. The trail is mostly shaded by trees. Very pleasant

Shining Sea Bikeway

scenic flat paved trail

October, 2023 by debbieldecosta

Very picturesque trail. Flat easy to ride. We went on a nice late October day. I can see in summer this trail might be very busy. We had lunch at the Woods Hole end in the tavern. Nice spot, we locked our bikes to their orchard rails by the road. Fun day.

Martha's Vineyard Bike Trails

Less then ideal biking conditions.....

September, 2023 by karenannhoffmann

Although Martha's Vineyard is beautiful--I would highly suggest biking only from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown. All the bike trails are literally right along the highway, with cars, trucks, and tour buses zooming by at ridiculous speeds. We were surprised because there was so much advertising about biking on the island that we thought for sure it would be a fantastic experience. Leaving Edgartown we road the so-called trail along the Edgerton West Tilsbury highway it was seriously not something I would never do again --as an experienced biker and love most trails this was just too boring unless you like riding 3 feet from the highway. We ended up cutting the ride short and going north back to Vineyard Haven. We did get in 21 miles, but I would skip biking on Martha's Vineyard and head back to the Cape to check out the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which is beautiful, scenic and a gem to ride on.

New Bedford Harborwalk

Panoramic View of the Harbor

August, 2023 by lauriegeejay

Wonderful & accessible trail. We biked over from Popes Island and rode the length of the trail. Seems like there’s ample parking at both ends and ramps make it easily accessible. Great view of the commercial fishing boats entering the inner harbor as well as the MV Wind Project staging at the west side.

Phoenix Bike Trail

Flat and well paved, easy access to small parks and benches. Sharing the trail with dog walkers is a part of fun. There is a breakfast place and an ice cream shop by the city parking lot at the west end!

Mattapoisett Rail Trail

I started my ride from Fairhaven the Phoenix trail and continued east. Many small side trips options .There are plenty of parking options on Mattapoisett end too.

Cape Cod Canal Bikeway

Interesting but average

June, 2023 by andrix

Observations:
1. Plenty of bikers, walkers, strollers, dogs, etc. but not overwhelming
2. Yes, it is just under 7 miles each way
3. From maps you would think the two bridges over the canal would offer opportunities to bike to the other side. Having crossed on one of these by car there are 3 or 4 reasons why I feel neither would be a good/fun choice. Best to go & return on the same side.
4. It's along a canal. OK, no surprise and interesting history. However the scenery doesn't really vary and apart from a few cormorants here and there not much is going on wildlife wise.
5. We combined this ride with a walk thru the Heritage Museum & Gardens in Sandwich. A botanical delight that included a fascinating antique car exhibit.
