This is a great trail. Great scenery and well paved. The northern part is partially under repair and new pavement so you have may to go to a starting point a little further south

Harlem Valley Rail Trail

Perfection in imperfection

May, 2024 by john9mcnulty

Several sections of the trail are currently closed between Copake and Millerton. Although I wouldn't recommend them to everyone, I considered them very rideable or walkable. I'd probably start a few stops down next time, but only to avoid rerouting if they were actually doing maintenance and wouldn't let me pass though. When I wasn't considering alternative routes I was overtaken by the scenery between Copake and Milerton. The wildlife and landscapes were seldom disappointing, but the countless bugs were distracting. Milerton to Wassaic was underwhelming if you've drove along 22 before. Strangely, it was in worse condition than the closed sections. Scattered frost heaves sent cyclist darting around the trail or shot out of their saddle and skateboards trying to break their fall. Knowing this made it easier on the way back, but also way slower.

Cannot say this enough. I rode into more bugs in 4h on this trail than I have in over 4000 miles anywhere else.

TLDR:
This trail is currently "closed" for several miles. The trail is full of stunning scenery, bumps, and bugs. Well worth visiting, but keep expectations in check. Would give 3.75 if it was an option.

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail

Not ADA compliant

February, 2024 by ljt trike rider

It looked very nice from the parking area, but could not get through the barricades with a recumbent trike. Drove over an hour and gates were shut and would have had to lift trike over gates. Disgusted with Massachusetts and whomever designed the barricades. Has anyone heard of the ADA?

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail

Great fall ride.

Excellent experience on this fresh paved trail. The scenery of the ponds and mountains in the distance was worth the trip.

Catskill Scenic Trail

Rough ride in patches

October, 2023 by rdavies

As others have mentioned, this is a rough trail. Although somewhat scenic, it requires a lot of vigilance to slog through the gravel and overgrown path. We have hybrid tires, so perhaps mountain bikes would offer a more comfortable ride. The high point of our trip was staying at the Stamford inn and eating at the Millpond Inn.

I rode the southern half of this trail from Millerton to Wasaic the first week in October on a 75° afternoon. Beautiful ride on a beautiful day.

Delaware and Hudson Rail-Trail

dog warning

September, 2023 by guamlee7

just walked the D & H trail from granville center to middle granville. really enjoyed the walk out toward middle granville but on the way back while walking through the farm (which was a delightful experience on the first trip through, seeing calves and cows) but then were charged by two pitties which attacked my dog and knocked me down. Luckily I had an umbrella and was able to get up and get away and down the trail. the dogs followed for a while but then returned to the farm. Too bad because was a very enjoyable walk until this. I just hope these two dogs dont really hurt someone....

Catskill Scenic Trail

Nice scenery but one step up from a goat path

September, 2023 by johnecarl

This path would be great if work were done on it. Road bikes won’t make it. You basically need a mountain bike with suspension. I have a hybrid bike with suspension and wide tires but it’s still a difficult ride. The scenery is nice but you have to pay a lot of attention to the path.

Ashokan Rail Trail

One of the most beautiful rail trails in NY

September, 2023 by johnecarl

This trail has beautiful scenery. While it’s lose gravel most road bikes with skinny tires are good. This is an awesome ride!!!

Ashokan Rail Trail

beautiful, easy ride

September, 2023 by mark.houghtaling

i've biked sections of this trail end to end on many occasions.

parking is plentiful at any of the 3 trailheads. the surface is well maintained crushed gravel and pretty level from end to end.

the views of the ashokan resevoir are beautiful, and the stream and woodland views along the entire length of the trail are also lovely.

the three trailheads are also convenient to charming towns, restaurants, and other nature attractions.

recommended!

Harlem Valley Rail Trail

Serene and lovely

September, 2023 by raresparky

Rode the 13 miles from Orphan Farm Rd to Millerton and back. At the northern end, at Orphan Farm Rd is a large parking area adjacent to a small farm, a solar panel field and a glamping site. No one there at 8am that Saturday but half a dozen cars upon my return at 11. Likewise, I had the trail practically to myself until I neared Millerton and found it moderately traveled by later that morning. The asphalt trail was in very good condition and there are a few boardwalk sections as well, also in very good condition. The environs are beautiful with forested sections, farm fields, wetlands and vistas of the nearby hills. Not more than two miles from the north end is the Depot Deli, near the entrance to Taconic State Park, where all manner of beverages, ice cream and snacks can be found. Breakfast at Oakhurst Diner in Millerton is highly recommended. Clean public bathrooms can be found just behind the schoolhouse museum beside the trail after crossing the main street.
