Boone Greenway Trail

FYI Watauga HS head entrance to the Greenway will be closed from mid June to September 2024

Repairs are being made to the creek and collapsing asphalt. So the Greenway doesn’t go all the way through.

Thermal Belt Rail Trail

Fantastic Trail

Rode this trail on June 7th, 2024 and it was an awesome ride. We started at the northern trailhead and rode 10 miles south and back. Super wide and very smooth asphalt the whole way. There were some downed trees from a Thunderstorm the night before blocking part of the trail on the way out but the cleanup crew had reopened it on our way back. So, very well maintained trail. Highly recommend.

Thermal Belt Rail Trail

wonderful paved trail

Started this trail at the Forest Hunt Elementary school parking area. Rode the “almost 30 “ miles of this trail. It was amazing. It’s flat and wide. The trails travels thru woods and tiny quaint towns. There are places to stop and grab a bite to eat. We had pizza and fried pickles at FLY BOY. It was not crowded on this Friday afternoon. Saw lots of squirrels. Highly recommend this trail. We had e bikes but it would be very easy to have a pedal bike due to flatness and no hills. The bike path very well maintained.

Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail

Fun for all

The is a fun trail but you need to be careful going on and off the bridges. Not rode bike friendly. Well worth the Hall of Fame statue.

Ride my e-bike on Foote trail. It was small gravel. Good quick ride. Walked my bike on asphalt trail because of lots of walkers but it wasn’t a long walk. Will go back not far from my house.

Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail

Still a favorite trail despite tree barrier

Rode an out and back from Damascus to ABD Trailhead. Trail was in great shape except for a large oak tree blocking the entire trail at approx the 6.75 mile point from ABD. A challenging social path has formed on the river side of the trail. The smart move is to just turn around and ride back the way you came. We weren’t that wise today so we bushwhacked around the tree and did our out and back. The trail surface was in great shape and obvious trail maintenance is keeping the “Creeper Trail” at its “creepy” best. At least the stretch we rode today.

City Walk

Really cool ride through downtown Hickory. You can ride from 1 bike shop to another but you have to cross a busy road to do it.
