Pequonnock River Trail

Bring your phone with GPS

May, 2024 by sboaters_tl

My wife and I did this trail on touring bikes, starting at Glenwood Park in Bridgeport, and proceeded northward. Easy to follow until Twin Brooks Park where the trail joins the park trails but there is no signage from here northward. Nice surface but we had to stop NUMEROUS times to look at our GPS to determine our location and which trail/path to take. Then finding the Tait Road starting point for the next section was a challenge. Either print out the Trail Description and have a map, and/or have your phone handy as there are very few, if any, signs showing where the trail goes. A nice series of trails once you find them but don't expect ANY directional advice.

North Shore Rail Trail

Relaxed ride for family

Yes it's along powerlines, but the ride is nice and easy, there are a few places to stop and enjoy a break. Most road crossings have crossing lights.

South County Trailway

Great trail with seamless trail connections at both ends!

May, 2024 by steve.schwinn

Road this fully paved trail in connection with the Old Putnam Trail (also known as the Putnam Greenway) as an out-and-back from the Tarrytown Lakes Park Parking Lot on Neperan Road (1 mile connector trail to the junction of the North and South County Trails) to the south end of Van Cortlandt Park. About a 35 mile round-trip. Trail is in very good shape with only a few root heaves. Note that the Old Putnam Trail is significantly narrower and busy with runners and walkers, especially on weekends.

Parks to Ports Greenway Trail

unpleasant

May, 2024 by pvdx6j56f6

Right along a busy 6 lane road where people seem to race between stoplights and show off their sub par modified exhaust systems. Bring your earplugs.

Farmington Canal Heritage Trail

Farmington/Heritage

Over run with cyclists. Many very inconsiderate. They don’t ring their bell until right behind you. Should be a biking speed limit. Many older people can’t move out of the way when there are pairs of cyclists that stay side by side. Extremely inconsiderate. Not all but too many are.

North Shore Rail Trail

Fairly flat

Only two things keeping this from being a 5 star are the numerous road crossings and the fact that the trail is under power lines. Best in the area.

Bronx River Greenway

Almost perfect for cyclist

May, 2024 by toddwrobinson_tl

We started in Bronxville and the beginning of the trail was a bit "annoying" with a bunch of people walking. We weren't sure if we would enjoy this trail...boy did that change. The trail to Kensico Dam was full of surprises, the good kind. A bunch of twist and turns with some fun hills. We'll be going back! We grabbed some sandwiches in Bronxville (Lange's Delicatessen) after our ride before heading home. A perfect day, 24 miles roundtrip.

Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway

Nice and long bike path

December, 2023 by kzhang20000

During the summer, there are more than 2 stops along the way you can buy drinks and food.

27 mile total. On my way back, I was riding against the wind, so tired......

Vanderbilt Motor Parkway

It's not bad

December, 2023 by kzhang20000

It's not too long, but watch out for sharp turns and steep climb onto the cross over bridge.
Also there were junkies in the Allie pond park parking lot asking people for money.

Vanderbilt Motor Parkway

Entire trail now reopened, repaved, with historic signs

November, 2023 by tom0153

The history of the Long Island Motor Parkway (as it was first recalled) is revealed with signage along the length of the Parkway, including the site of the Jacob Johnson Family Burial Ground who appears in the 1830 Census as a "free colored man." At least two of his sons served in a segregated unit in the Civil War. He was a farmer in the area until retirement when he lived very close to Alley Pond.
The length of the entire park roadway, designated as part of the Greenway, has been repaved.
Review other park features when you come. In another area of the larger Alley Pond Park is found the oldest and tallest tree in NYC, already growing at the time of George Washington, known as the Alley Pond Giant. Hiking trails throughout the Park are well maintained.
