Geocaching

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is proud to announce a new partnership with Geocaching.com, introducing an exciting new trail activity to our enthusiastic audience of trail users. As the backbone of the geocaching community, Geocaching.com is the place to learn about the sport and find geocaches in your area.

What is Geocaching? Though a relatively new activity, geocaching is practiced around the world and adds an exciting dimension to trail use. Simply put, it’s a high-tech treasure hunt using a GPS unit. Geocachers hide small “treasures” in containers (called “geocaches”) and record the coordinates of their caches on Geocaching.com for others to find. They also post anything from helpful clues to sophisticated puzzles for others to decode in order to find the geocache. The activity is all about hiding and seeking, not about the value of the hidden treasure. With more than 700,000 geocaches placed worldwide you will certainly find more than a few on rail-trails. Get started today at Geocaching.com.

Mapping and Caching. As part of RTC’s multi-year mapping initiative and our partnership with Geocaching.com, we will be appealing to the geocaching community to help us complete mapping all 1,500-plus of our open rail-trails. RTC’s geocaching mapping campaign here. And make sure to register to receive partnership development updates.

Share Your Experience. . Now that you know about geocaching on rail-trails, we hope you try this great new activity today! And we invite you back to here to share your geocaching experience with other TrailLink.com users. Find a Trail and post reviews and photos, plus read and view the geocaching journeys of other rail-trail enthusiasts like yourself.
