John Muir Trail:
California
Trail Map
Description:
From the Trail Website (http://www.pcta.org/about_trail/muir/over.asp): The John Muir Trail is 211 miles long and runs from Yosemite Valley to Mt Whitney, in California. Since the trail ends/starts at the top of the highest point in the lower 48, one must still hike another 11 miles and 6000 feet down to/up from Whitney Portal, the southern trail head.
The John Muir Trail runs through 3 National Parks: Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia. When not within a National Park, the trail runs through Forest Service land, including the John Muir and Ansel Adams Wilderness areas. The trail also passes through the Devils Postpile National Monument near Red's meadow.
One hundred seventy-five of the 211 miles of the John Muir Trail lie on the same route as the 2,665 mile Pacific Crest Trail. The two ends -- from Yosemite Valley to Tuolumne Meadows and from Crabtree Meadows to Mt Whitney -- are different. Because most of the John Muir Trail lies within the bounds of the Pacific Crest Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail Association (www.pcta.org) is a good place to get information about the John Muir Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail Association solicits input from hikers on trail conditions, and thye can usually give you the current trail conditions, especially early in the season.
