Iditarod History By Don Bowers: The Iditarod Trail and the mushers who used it have become legends in the history of the north country. However, there is much more to the story than many people realize. The Iditarod and the sled dog were part of a system of transportation and a way of life in Alaska that were in many ways unique in the world. Nowhere else did the particular combination of factors come together as they did in Alaska in the decades surrounding the turn of the nineteenth into the twentieth century. It can safely be said that mushing as a means of transportation reached its zenith in Alaska in those years. Specifically, the Iditarod Trail can be considered the high-water mark of the dog sled as a primary means of long-distance transportation.
