Description:
From the Trail Website: On June 4, 1999, the city of Camden, New Jersey, celebrated the opening of the Parkside Trail, the first ¼-mile section of the Camden Greenway. Bringing a country feel to the city, the shady and quiet trail cuts through the woods along the beautiful Cooper River and links a high school, grade school and two parks. The Parkside Trail is the first step in implementing the Camden Greenways Plan, an ambitious, community-oriented plan to develop a nine-mile bike trail and to promote open space preservation and economic development along the Cooper and Delaware Rivers and Newton Creek in Camden, a poor city struggling with typical urban problems but rich in natural and cultural resources. The Camden Greenways working group, a partnership of city, county, state, and federal governments, private organizations and neighborhood groups, has been working since 1995 to develop support and funding for the plan. The Parkside Trail was developed with funding from the National Recreational Trails Act, administered through the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The Rivers & Trails program of the National Park Service helped the Camden Greenways working group facilitate public meetings, develop a brochure and organize the trail's opening in June 1999.
