Armstrong Trail

Nice trail

April, 2024 by vicki1960

While in the Schenley area, decided to scope the new bridge over the Kiskiminetas River. The historic bridge was recently refurbished to accommodate the bike trail. This bridge is at the very southern end of the trail at the Kiskiminetas Junction where the is an active rail line looking to the South towards the Tredway Trail. At the Kiski Junction/Schenley there is ample parking and lock #5 on the Allegheny River is nearby. Trail surface is crushed limestone and newly laid. Will get more packed down as there are more trail users. Headed North on this trail a few miles. Follows the Allegheny River. In Schenley there are quite a few old factories along the trail but heading North, becomes scenic and peaceful.

Spring 2023 Ride

April, 2024 by vicki1960

Trail is 5.5 miles in length. Parked under the 356 bridge at Freeport and biked North 1.5 miles to the Kiskiminetas Junction at the Kiskiminetas River. At this point there is an active rail line with No Trespassing signs. Just ahead on the other side of the tracks is the end of the Armstrong Trail but you cannot get to it. Turned around and went back to where the car was parked and went 4ish miles South on the trail almost to Braeburn where it ends. Nice wide trail of packed crushed limestone. Ok/doable on a hybrid bike. Trail follows the Allegheny River.

Roaring Run Trail

The crushed stone surface was in good condition despite the recent heavy rain. I look forward to visiting again when the trees have leaves.

Butler-Freeport Community Trail

I live in Butler and this is my go-to home trail. I set out to do the entire trail round trip but the trail was closed 5 miles from Freeport so today was only 30 miles round trip.

Winter Ride-February 2024

February, 2024 by vicki1960

Biked from Emlenton to Kennerdell and back. Unseasonably warm Winter Day. New doors have been installed on the Rockland Tunnel, South Portal, to eliminate freeze/thaw causing interior tunnel damage. The big doors are closed at this point but access is thru man door. There are no doors on the North portal.

Foxburg to Emlenton-January 2024

January, 2024 by vicki1960

New section under development from Foxburg to Emlenton. ART in CC has been working on this section and coming along nicely and doing a great job clearing. There are also plans for the Fox-Hunt Community Park in Foxburg at the bridge. We parked in Foxburg and walked North about 1/3 of a mile to the trail which is located behind the trucking company. There you can use this section of the trail for approx 3 miles to Emlenton. Enjoyed our Winter trek by snowshoeing.

Great trail with a few recent issues

November, 2023 by michael.farabaugh

I ride my bike on this trail everyday except when it's pouring rain or there is snow on the ground. It was just about perfect until Sunday, November 5th, 2023. One of those ride on leaf blowers started down by Dry Run Road and went to the top near Mullshoe. It blew off most of the pea gravel that was on the trail and exposed the big loose stones and the dirt. After just a little rain last night the trail was a muddy mess. I had to take off my sweat shirt before getting into my car because it was covered in mud on the back of it. By spring the trail will be a disaster.

Avoid Butler

November, 2023 by legsandlouie

Rode the trail north to Butler twice. On each trip we rode into nearby downtown Butler to eat. Followed streets marked as bike routes. Between the two rides, we were accosted by angry or unpleasant locals in their cars on three occasions. Twice of which were shouts about how illegal or rude it is to ride bikes and/on the street or slow traffic. The other encounter was a buzz accompanied by shouts of an ignorant nature. All of these occurred in daylight and on city streets. This town is not just unfriendly to cyclists, it is just unfriendly.

Out and back to Marianne and Marienville from Leeper

Almost 52 miles total on an out back of all the paved trail. Great ride through some cute little towns, some corn fields and quite a lot of woods.

Ghost Town Trail

A great trail for scenery and a lot of solitude

October, 2023 by bestesbrau56_tl

Anyone who rides Rails to Trails and have been on this trail loved it like we have. The trail is well maintained and there is plenty to see like the history, the fauna and the wildlife. We have not completed MM 18 to Ebensburg yet but we plan to. We don't mark a trail as completed until we ride both ways because the view is so different. And this trail is no exception to that rule. We have done MM 1 to 15, then 15 to 18 to the CI extension to MM 9, to Duman Lake which for a 1/4 mile or so is a pretty nice single track. We plan on coming back in the spring when the rhododendron are blooming. Can't wait!

Armstrong Trail

beautiful ¿¿¿

This is a really nice trail to ride. It is the closest trail to our house so it’s our go to trail. The northern end it is somewhat desolate, and sometimes we don’t even see any other riders! The lower end is a little busier, but fun! Be very careful between the YMCA and the Mariner around mile post 46. The trail is paved, but very, very bumpy! Especially in the right hand lane heading to Ford City. Bikers were actually walking their bikes through the stretch. I’m

Redbank Valley Rail Trail

No Ballast on This Trail

October, 2023 by grantworld

I did a round trip ride on the Redbank this summer. (As an FYI I ride on 700x35 Marathon Plus tires.) I might suggest this trail is among the best maintained trails I have been on. Even the morning I rode in a light rain there were no puddles or mud. I don’t know why TrailLink says there is ballast. That is very unfair to the folks who have done such a great job on this trail. It’s very scenic as you would expect for this part of the country. And who doesn’t love (2) tunnels! There are also informative markers that are, well, informative and add a bit of local color to the ride. Depending on how much and where on the trail you ride you may need to plan your food stops. For example, on the western end of the trail I continued north on the Armstrong Trail to East Brady for lunch. Bring a bit of extra cash since not every restaurant takes credit cards. I plan to be back and will be bringing a few friends along this time.
