North Central State Trail

awesome trail

I’ve ridden this trail many times from Topinabee to Wolverine and back; topinabee to cheboygan and back. Great trail for gravel bike. Well maintained, safe, and very scenic.

Huron Sunrise Trail

My husband and I rode this and it was fantastic. So glad the space is claimed along the Lake Huron shoreline for this paved trail. We want a similar trail close to Alpena.

Mackinac Island Loop (State Highway 185)

A Great 8.2 mile loop

September, 2023 by 2fdq3rqtyk

The motorized vehicles on the island since 1901. The loop is 8.2 miles, they have a lot of souvenirs to remember your bike or hike or horse carriage ride around the island.

North Eastern State Trail

Alpena to Bolton and back

August, 2023 by 2xjjyp9mpt

What a nice trail! Peaceful ride to Bolton and back (20 miles) and only saw 2 other riders. Trail is in great shape. The trailhead in Alpena is very nice with picnic tables and very nice restrooms. Looking forward to riding more of the northeastern trail, as well as the north central trail.

Huron Sunrise Trail

Lovely trail

This is a lovely trail, well marked and lots of beautiful sites. It starts it a small city park on the south side of town and end at 40 Mile Lighthouse! The trail takes you thru beautiful forests, parks, a small portion of the city, Lake Huron, passing Hoeft State Park, which you can also go into and explore and over some small picturesque bridges. Highly recommend!

Alpena Bi-Path

poorly marked

August, 2023 by debbiejartrip

This was definitely the most diverse trail we’ve rode! This trail takes you thru a fairground, past a hospital, a junior college, industrial complex, residential areas, cemeteries, rivers, over major roads, parks and over bridges. You travel on a lot of sidewalks… but the worst part was it was poorly marked. This app made riding this trail possible! Lots of stop and goes! We will not do this trail again!

North Western State Trail

Made for a good afternoon ride

August, 2023 by angela.dawn.allen

July 2023 we rode from Mackinac Bridge to Petoskey. Leaving Mack City, the trail was paved for a short distance then switched to pea sized gravel that seemed freshly placed and was slightly loose in some spots until Alanson where it was paved all the way to Petoskey. We rode with 40mm tire gravel bikes and had no issues. Smooth road bike tires would likely be challenging in looser gravel and sand at some road crossings. With 25 or 28mm, with strong confidence and bike handling skills, it might be okay. Scenery was true upper MI forest with very few views of water. Petoskey Brewing at the end of the trail also has good food. Would recommend the trail!

Mackinac Island Loop (State Highway 185)

circumnavigate island

July, 2023 by dan.allen.50552

There aren’t to many rides where you can do a loop trail that goes around an entire island. That always has beautiful clear water always right there. Very touristy though. This takes the record for the most bikes with the fewest folks that have no bike etiquette at all! Taking your bike at time of writing was $21( no electric). Rentals about $18 an hour. Do this ride but bring a lot of patience.

Mackinac Island Loop (State Highway 185)

trail great

May, 2023 by lyonsjustin1958

We are a 63 year old couple. We took our own bikes across on the ferry after paying a fee. There are many bike rental shops but we were glad we had our own bikes. The 8.2 mile loop was a nice ride except we hit the mayfly’s hatch. Recommend avoiding this time. Trail was smooth and not as crowded as town. The interior roads of the island were more isolated and no mayfly. Loved having to avoid horse and carriage.

Highly Recommend

We rode this trail from Mackinaw to Petosky as part of a three day ride on several Northern Michigan trails. We were all on mountain bikes and had no issues at all with the trail surfaces. The scenery was incredible along the way, and once you get to Alanson the last 8 miles into Petosky are all paved so it is very easy going. Good signage and a lot of nice stops along the route.

North Central State Trail

Beautiful and well maintained

September, 2022 by banders70000

Rode the entire length of this trail from Gaylord to Cheboygan, then to Mackinaw City the next morning. Excellent crushed gravel surface, very easy to ride on with a mountain bike. The scenery is beautiful along the entire route and there are numerous great stops along the way. Gentle downhill all the way to Wolverine, then it was basically flat into Cheboygan and along Lake Huron to Mackinaw. We also rode the opposite way a couple days later, and the uphill climb back to Gaylord was very doable, even at the latter stages of a 50 mile ride. I highly recommend this ride.

Mackinac City start

8/28/2022. Rode trail from Mackinac City south for 10 miles and then back. It was awesome. Trail in good shape. Large trees provided shade( unlike Oklahoma). Very quiet solitary. Came around a corner and within 5 yards of a big buck. Thanks Michigan!
