GPS Data Downloads
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is pleased to provide TrailLink.com users with
downloads of our quality map data for use on their GPS units or GPS-enabled devices!
Since 2004, RTC has been mapping trails across the United States, and has made these
maps available to users through TrailLink.com. This ground-breaking
mapping initiative and the TrailLink.com web site are only made possible
by the generosity of our members and supporters. We hope that you will consider
supporting our on-going work through a tax-deductible donation.
What You Get
When you choose to download data for your GPS receiver or GPS-enabled device, you’ll
receive a file that contains the trail line, as well as the various trail waypoints
that are shown on the trail map. Data is currently provided in *.gpx format. Downloads
are currently limited to 5 trails per day per registered user.
A GPX File? What’s That?
The *.gpx
(GPS Exchange)
format is a highly flexible file format that can be used by most GPS and GPS-enabled
devices. It is not specific to any particular manufacturer and is not a proprietary
format.
Once you download and save the *.gpx file to your computer, you may load the data
onto your unit using the software provided by your unit’s manufacturer. You may
also use a variety of software applications to convert the *.gpx file into other
formats (such as *.kml and shapefile) for use with other programs and web applications
such as Google Earth and Google Maps.
At this time RTC does not provide user support for any specific units. Users are
responsible for understanding how to load data onto their specific GPS unit or GPS-enabled
device.
