In 1986, the “City of Murals” began utilizing buildings in downtown Steubenville as canvases for works of art. Through continuous collaboration with artists and historians, Steubenville transformed 25 walls into scenes depicting historical moments and famous residents of the area. These murals have become as much a part of Steubenville’s identity as the people and events they portray. As inspiring scenes of former residents like Dean Martin and Moses Fleetwood Walker bring visitors into town, the murals become a vibrant backdrop to the shops, outdoor events and farmers markets in the lively downtown area.
