Cedar River Trail (WA)
Scenic Trail

By hikinglite in 5/26/2008 10:07:50 PM |

The Cedar River Trail is now paved (wide, like all rail trails should be) from where it crosses under I 405 to the intersection with the 'Green To Cedar River Trail'. Both trails are bikable, but on ballast from that point on and are very wooded. It is a slight climb most of the way up river, so I would recommend starting down river and working up, so you will have an easier ride back. The trail has some very scenic sections and some other sections along the highway. Part of the trail between I 405 and Lake Washington goes thru downtown and is hard to find/follow and may be closed when the water is high. The section near the Boeing property at Lake Wahington is marked for pedestrians only, but the adjacent road is an acceptable alternative. With only a few road crossings, I had a great time riding this trail.

Old Railroad Grade
Awesome Views

By hikinglite in 3/9/2008 1:29:32 AM |

I had one of the best rides of my life on this trail. The views were fantastic along this old cog railway right of way, especially at the West Point Inn, were you can even stay the night if you book ahead. The surface is mostly crushed rock and dirt so it is not appropriate for road bikes with skinny tires and is very tiring since it is an almost constant uphill ride on a rough surface; but, the views and the thrill ride on the way down make up for the pain. Not for the out of shape. Watch out for speeding cyclists coming down the mountain as you make your climb.

West County Trail & Joe Rodota Trail
Popular Trail

By hikinglite in 3/9/2008 1:22:28 AM |

The Rodota Trail provides a good transit link for the area and is very popular with recreational riders and pedestrians. In Santa Rosa it connects with a very beautiful parallel paved trail that runs along the river thru the vineyards. You can use some of the local roads to make a nice loop. Worth going out of your way to ride.

Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail (Monterey Bay Coastal Trail)
Great Views but Very Windy at Times

By hikinglite in 3/9/2008 1:07:05 AM |

I did this trail from south to north and back again. This is really a very diverse trail with the urban area thru Monterey in the south, the ocean views in the middle and then road views up north. Just south of Roberts Ave, take the turn up and over the dunes instead of going straight and then having to use the road to continure on the trail. North of the ocean views is a gap in the trail, but it is well signed on the road. Lots of hills and wind to give you a workout. The northern terminus is at Del Monte Blvd and Lapis Road on the north side of Marina. I would surely go out of my way to ride this trail again.

Mill Valley-Sausalito Multi-purpose Path
Short and Hot

By hikinglite in 3/9/2008 12:51:58 AM |

This is a very popular trail with pedestrians. The pavement is a bit rough and it is wide out in the open, so would be hot on a sunny day in the summer. I was happy to do this trail, but wouldn't go out of my way to do it again.

Paseo del Bosque Trail
Beautiful Ride

By hikinglite in 3/9/2008 12:44:29 AM |

This trail is worth going out of your way for. The pavement is in mostly good condition and is popular with cyclists as well as pedestrians. While a little narrow, the trail does go under crossroads, so it provides a safe north south transit link thru Albuquerque.

Putnam Trailway
Great alternate transportation

"The new section's northern terminus is on Seminary Hill Rd at Glenida Court, just a short ride on Rt 6 from Brewster. I rode it today and continued on the North and South County trails all the way to Yonkers!! Great alternative to using a car."
