PROJECT TRAIL:Herndon to Coon Rapids Trail

  • States: Iowa
  • Counties: Carroll, Guthrie
  • Length: 17 miles
  • Trail end points: Herndon, Iowa (intersection with Raccoon River Valley Trail) to Coon Rapids, Iowa
This proposed 17 mile rail- to-trail project will extend the Raccoon River Valley Trail System from Herndon 17 miles west through Guthrie County to end at the Coon Rapids-Whiterock rural tourism destination area. This will complete a key segment of the cross-country American Discovery Trail and provide Des Moines bikers a 70-mile off-road route all the way to Coon Rapids, site of the historic 1959 visit of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. The trail is currently in the planning and development stages, with most funds to acquire ROW largely secured. The next stages will be bridge replacements and finally, cement paving.
