Print Friendly MapThe Murfreesboro's Stones River Greenway System comprises 8.5 miles of linear park trails in the Stones River and Lytle Creek areas. The asphalt trails are 12 feet wide and are paved to allow walking, jogging, rollerblading and bicycling.
The greenway system has several trailheads with parking lots: Thompson Lane, Broad Street, General Bragg, Redoubt Brannon, Manson Pike, Fortress Rosecrans and Cannonsburgh. The General Bragg trailhead has one picnic shelter with four tables and a playground. A recent extension takes the trail south to Salem Pke/SR 99, and parking is available at the end of Cason Trail Road.
A 0.25-mile spur connects the Stones River National Battlefield, Artillery Monument, Fortress Rosecrans, Redoubt Brannan and Cannonsburgh Village, with historic wayside signs and exhibits.
South of the Southridge Trailhead, at 104 Player Dr, the greenway uses sections of road to guide users south of Murfreesboro to Barfield Crescent Park which features 7 miles of hiking trails, campsites, disc golf course and a large baseball/softball complex.
There are several parking access points for this trail including at the trail's northern endpoint on N. Thompson Ln., at the Redoubt Brannon Trailhead (1300 W College St), and at both the Cannonsburgh Trailhead (312 S Front St) and near the southern endpoint at 1100 Cason Trail.

Rode to the north trailhead and just south to i24 where the trail is now under construction. Nice amount of traffic and we even saw some wild turkeys. Would come again if ever I pass through Murfreesboro again.
Fun paved pave along the Stones River thru Civil war battle sites. Ride thru shaded canopies, under bridges over bridges, winding thru field. Deer jumping across the trails. Bunny rabbits hopping around in the fields. Great ride at sunset to dark. Enjoy!
Took the opportunity to ride this trail and glad I did. This greenway is wide, shady with lots of nice scenery. I looped it end to end with the connecting trail for a 25 mile ride. It is now on my list of favorites in the Middle Tennessee area.
My husband and I rode this trail for the first time and were so happy we discovered it! Not only did we enjoy a peaceful, scenic ride along the river, there is plenty of civil war landmarks along the way to learn about. The 10 mile ride runs through a historic battlefield, a park with picnic benches, and golf course, so there are plenty of places to stop along the way if you wish. When we went, a portion of the bridge that connects to the trail on over the river was closed on both sides due to current repair and maintenance so we were a bit disappointed, however, we jumped in our car and found the trail that continued on the other side and finished up that part of the trail which was worth it!
This is an awesome trail. It was extended beyond Hwy 99, south, all the way to Barfield park. If you start at Barfield, Thompson or Canonsburg, you can easily get 30 miles in doing an out and back to rack terminus.
We completed from Thomson Lane to Barfield Crescent (20 mi total). This is a well maintained path with plenty of places to stop for breaks and pictures. I’m fairly new to bike riding and found everything easy to maneuver.
The trail is very nice, mostly flat with great scenery.
Pretty ride on the river.
12 miles of trail from Thompson lane to Barfield park. Some areas are more congested than others, but overall not crowded. Add in the battlefield trails and Gateway Island loop for pretty scenery and a history lesson. There are multiple trailheads for access across the entire town. Several of the trailheads have public restrooms that are reasonably clean.
These trails have a LOT going for them, but strictly for skating I give them only 3 stars.
The asphalt is in good shape in terms of not having very many root cracks, but roughly half of it was paved using course aggregate. There is a lot of vibration of the wheels going over it. Not smooth pavement that is a pleasure to skate on.
The trail is well shaded, and that keeps it cool. But it also delays evaporation of water off the pavement. The day I skated it (in late afternoon) there were many wet/damp spots. These were very slippery.
This was a great trail in general. Perfect for walking or biking. Many of the entrance points have air stations for your bike tires if needed! The trail was beautiful! Scenes of waterfalls, streams and greenery! I will be back!

This is a great ride with much of it along the river. Can also connect to the ride through Stones River National Battlefield.
Nice shaded trail along Stone River with historical and environmental stops along the way. A number of restroom and drinking fountains at trail heads, which are usually in parks. A lot nicer trail than I was expecting in a small town.
I would suggest parking at Old Fort Park 1028 Golf Ln, Murfreesboro, and biking both ways. The signs are a little confusing, but one trail takes you downtown the other along the river.
My wife and I stopped at this trail on our travels to Florida. We stopped at this trail to get a quick ride in. We found the trail to be a great trail that offered many splendid views in a urban and country setting. The trail is flat and wider than typical. This was a gorgeous spring day and the trail was heavily traveled but well spaced with the traffic. The trail seems to be used as a connector trail. The trail is flat and very smooth paved asphalt. Great trail we will be back and use the trail for a moment to get out of the car. The trail is relatively close to the interstate.
Great trail, lots of people enjoying the outdoors right along the river.
Came from Michigan, and rode this trail on a BEAUTIFUL Saturday before Easter. BEAUTIFUL ride. lot's of walkers and bike riders. Thoroughly enjoyed the trail..

Our family continues to use this trail on a weekly basis. Many trail heads to utilize. This provides a variety of experiences.
Use to walk the Thompson Lane Trail Head often. Now the trail is so overgrown and out of control, that it is scary for women to walk alone in fear of predators hiding in weeds and bushes. Just is not a safe place anymore.
Years ago I use to walk my dog on this trail every day and admire the beauty of the river, What happened? I visited the trail after leaving the area for a few years and I cant even see the river now it is so over grown! I would love to put together a clean up crew/group to revive the view of the river!
The trail run in my backyard on stones river , me my wife and the kids get on the trail several times every week , kids ride their segways or skate boards , we ride our bikes or walk , a lot of nice scneary areas on the river , beautiful flowers , trees , and abundant wild life , we've seen deer , turkey , snakes , fox , oposoms, raccoons , blue hearion crane, ducks , gees , a peacock, rabbits, beavers ....
To see all those animals right in the middle of the city is amazing
The trail is very easy for bike ride to since most of it flat .
You can also fish in stone river , I caught 9 lb bass and a lot of cat fish , canoeing is very nice on stone river , just get mosquitos repellant on hot summer evening .
My husband and I just started cycling two months ago. This is my favorite trail yet. It's not too difficult for someone like me who was woefully out of shape when I started riding regularly (now up to 20+ miles a week). It's absolutely beautiful and provides plenty of much needed shade when it's 95 degrees (like it's been for us). Highly recommended trail.

Great trail, some historical items along the way. Not difficult, great for younger riders.
Whether walking or biking, in the spring or fall, this trail is a must visit. There's beautiful scenery, nice terrain, and plenty of great photo opportunities.

Parts are closed due to the recent tornado damage, but otherwise a very good trail. The facilities appear to be new.
