Print Friendly MapIn western Williamsburg, the Powhatan Creek Trail stretches 2 miles from the historical Jamestown Settlement attraction to Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School. It begins near the one mile marker on the Greensprings portion of the Virginia Capital Trail, which will one day stretch 50 miles from Williamsburg to the state’s capital in Richmond.
The trail first takes you straight across a large field and then winds around a housing development. As you near the creek, the trail becomes more diverse with changes in elevation and a more natural setting. As you make your way through the wooded area you will cross wooden bridges and follow the creek. As you leave the creek area, you will ascend toward the trail end at the school and a water treatment facility. There it connects you to other neighborhoods.
Parking is available at the Jamestown Settlement (2110 Jamestown Road) and at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School (3131 Ironbound Road).
Nice shaded trail starting from the elementary school with bridges going over marshes, and creeks. Not lots of people, but set between some subdivisions. There were a few benches to sit on before getting to the meadow.
Hi. So, I tried this trail for the first time.. starting from the elementary school.. I loved it!! It was perfect.. the scenery is amazing.. and to get to see some history along the way, it was a great feeling.. There are some hills in the beginning, very doable.. and some turns.. and 2 bridges, that are lovely.. I will say, I did not notice any mile markers, so it was confusing to tell when I approached Greensprings, as I was hoping it would be obvious, so I could turn around and head back.. but I couldn’t tell.. so I just turned around when the watch said 2.4 miles..
Asphalt parts of trail are awesome but the boardwalks are a killer. Not recommended for quads. Beautiful and Clean! Definitely go there again but not on skates 😉
I discovered this 2 mile trail today while triking the Virginia Capital Trail. There are a lot of fun ups and downs and twists and turns in this short 4 mile round trip ride. The narrow bridges even have turns in them so keep your eyes open. This trail is definitely worthy of a visit.
Awesome ride!!! It is just 2 miles (out) but.... There is a lot of beautiful scenery, bridges, hills... Yes there are some hills.... But it is the best 2 mile rides I have ever been on! If you are on the Virginia Capital Trail make this a must!!!
We happened upon this trail by accident from the Capital Trail--what an amazing find! Numerous long bridges and hills for such a short ride--all in the shade of the woods, making this a beautiful, magical place. I highly recommend. There is parking at the little elementary school on one end, and it's also accessible from the Capital Trail (park at the wayside historical markers).
We rode the Powhatan Creek Trail on Labor Day weekend. Although it is only two miles, it is adjacent to the Virginia Capital Trail and is a great way to add mileage to your VCT ride. The scenery along the wetland part of the trail is beautiful. There are Cypress knees present in the creek, which is interesting to look at as you ride. The elevation changes make for a fun and slightly challenging ride. We saw families riding together and some foot traffic that day. Overall, this was a great trail and look forward to riding it the next time I am on the VCT.
