Trail Map
Description:
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the longest natural public thoroughfare in the world, goes through four of the seven ecologically sensitive and threatened forest habitats of North America. The 2,160-mile-long footpath traverses the ridge-crests and major valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine, along the edge of some of the nation's most densely-populated urban areas. The narrow corridor of federal and state land on which the footpath is located is protected from development and preserves much of the natural and early historical heritage of the eastern United States. The need to protect the Appalachian corridor from encroaching development led to the passage of the National Trails System Act in 1968.
