Description:
The Arizona Trail stretches 817 miles across the state of Arizona (north–south), from the Arizona–Utah border west of Lake Powell to the Arizona–Mexico border west of Bisbee. The trail traverses a wide diversity of terrain, passing among canyons, desert, mountains and forests and linking wilderness areas, towns and cities, historic sites and points of interest.

The multi-use trail is for non-motorized use, including hikers, backpackers, equestrians (mule and llama packers, too), bicyclists, runners, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. The Arizona Trail is a National Scenic Trail and was 26 years in the making, thanks to city, state, and federal government entities; municipalities, businesses and organizations; and a host of dedicated volunteers across the region.

Trail explorers will discover remote wilderness areas, geologically significant sights, charming communities and city amenities, historical and prehistoric sites (including mining and railroad history, national monuments and cliff dwellings). The trail passes through such places as the Kentucky Camp mine site, cliff dwellings at Tonto and Walnut Canyon National Monuments, Roosevelt Dam, Grand Canyon National Park, Colossal Cave, the former railroad town of Patagonia and logging railroads near Mormon Lake, and early U. S. Forest Service history at General Springs Cabin.

Most of the Arizona Trail is on public lands far from urban areas, so can be remote in many places. Plan your trip accordingly. Visit the Arizona Trail website for more information and detailed segment maps, which are available for a fee.
