The Awendaw Passage is a 7-mile single-track segment of the Palmetto Trail, which will extend more than 425 miles across South Carolina when completed. Named for the creek it follows, this scenic trail winds along the edge of a salt marsh and through a forested area where travelers can glimpse the famed palmetto trees, South Carolina's symbolic tree featured on the state's flag.
The Awendaw Passage is the coastal terminus of the Palmetto Trail, ending at the intracoastal waterway. The trail offers sweeping views of the salt marsh and includes an overlook and boardwalk at Walnut Grove.
From McClellanville drive south on US 17 about 6.5 miles. From Awendaw drive north about 3 miles and turn at the Buck Hall Recreation Area sign, where you can park.
You can also access the trail from the Awendaw canoe launch at the end of Rosa Green Road or the
Swamp Fox trailhead on US 17.
Rode the trail over christmas. Very easy trail with only a few areas with roots. Looks like it can get muddy in some areas but it was dry and solid when I rode it. Not a challenging trail but has great scennery as half of it winds along the salt marsh. ...
