Description:
From www.minneapolisparks.org: The Bassett's Creek Trail officially opened on Saturday, October 12, 2002. Threading its way along Bassett's Creek from Glenwood Avenue through Bassett's Creek Park, the trail veers off and runs along the north end of Bryn Mawr Meadows to the spiral bridge, where it connects to Cedar Lake Trail, leading a cyclist right into downtown Minneapolis.

Before completion of the new bike trail, the bike commute from the Bryn Mawr or Harrison neighborhood to downtown had been a challenge at best. Cyclists had to navigate busy streets that are not well adapted to bike traffic. The Bassett's Creek Trail provides a first-class, 10-minute link to downtown. The trail, however, offers much more than efficiency. As an unbroken trail through fabulous scenery, it offers new biking opportunities to the recreational biker.

The original plan to build the bike trail along the old railroad bed was set aside when negotiations broke down between the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. The Park Board and neighborhood residents then began to consider possible alternatives. They chose the current alignment hoping eventually the bike trail could be converted to a pedestrian path should the possibility to build the bike trail in the rail bed as originally envisioned becomes a reality.

Through the lobbying efforts of members of the Bryn Mawr and Harrison Neighborhood Association, and with the help of State Senator Linda Higgins and State Representative Margaret Anderson Keliher, the trail was funded with a $400,000 special allocation from the Metropolitan Council's Metropolitan Parks and Open Space Commission. The Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association also contributed $45,000 in Neighborhood Revitalization Program funds to the trail project.
