Buckeye Trail:
Ohio
Trail Map
Description:
From the Trail Website (www.buckeyetrail.org): Imagine hiking for days along the towpath of a 19th century canal, where even the memories of the old wooden barges do not disturb the now still waters. Imagine walking down a narrow country lane past fields of golden corn, the only sounds disturbing the morning mist are cows lowing in a distant pasture. Imagine streams of sweat pouring from your forehead on a hot summer's day, as you strain to reach the summit, to be rewarded with a view of hills so scenic, they've been called the Little Smokies'. And imagine a trail that touches the outskirts of major cities, passing through urban greenways and along city streets.
Imagine no more, for this represents just a part of the diversity you can experience on the Buckeye Trail. For nearly 1,300 miles, the Buckeye Trail winds around Ohio, reaching into every corner of the state. From a beachhead on Lake Erie near Cleveland, to an hilltop overlooking the Ohio River in Cincinnati, a hiker can experience a little of all that Ohio has to offer.
First envisioned in the late 1950s, the Buckeye Trail evolved into a large loop, branching both north and east from Cincinnati. The separate legs rejoin in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Cleveland and complete the trip to the lake. Because the Buckeye Trail is a loop, trail users can start a hike at any point and hike as long as they want without ever reaching an end.
