Coalwood Trail Description

The Coalwood Trail runs east–west for 26.4 miles between the Cusino State Wildlife Research Area and the town of Chatham. The trail traverses wooded and open terrain in parts of the Hiawatha National Forest. Just east of where the trail crosses M-94 is another system of loop trails (Valley Spur Trail) for mountain bikers and hikers.

The section between the M-94 at the trail's eastern end and M-94 north of Sixteenmile Lake is open to ATVs and snowmobiles. At its eastern end, the Coalwood Trail links with the Haywire Trail (at M-94 just south of M-28).

Parking and Trail Access

A few parking spaces are available at the Chatham end off Rock River Road. You can also access the trail from several places along Co. Hwy. 532/Wyman Rd./Forest Service Rd. 2264 east of M-94. Limited parking is available at the eastern end off M-94 where the trail meets the Haywire Trail.

Sandy and not really meant for bikes

Tried this east of Coalwood but gave up after a mile so don't know if the rest is better. Deep sand and deep ruts from all terrain vehicles. Signs implied it was only open to off road vehicles although did not explicitly ban pedal bikes. I was riding a mountain bike with 2.3" tires but still kept sinking into the sand. Would not recommend.
