Description:
The Cross Vermont Trail, spanning 75 miles from the Connecticut River to Lake Champlain, will be Vermont's first east-west, long distance trail. The eastern half of the Trail will utilize the historic Montpelier-Wells River railbed, passing by 35 miles of farms, lakes, beaches, forests, hiking trails, restaurants and bike shops. The western part of the Trail will follow existing town and state roads, and will utilize recreation paths and off-road routes wherever possible. The Cross Vermont Trail will form an important east-west connection to several major north-south recreation tails, including the Lake Champlain Greenway, the Long Trail and Catamount Trail, and the proposed Connecticut River Greenway.

Cross Vermont Rail from Ryegate (Mills Memorial Ballfield) to Lake Groton
By aabernhard on April 25, 2009
A good rail trail ride but on somewhat rough surface. The southernmost section starting at Fish & Wildlife Parking looked too rough so we started at the Mills Memorial Ballfield in Ryegate. Mildly uphill all the way with a pleasant easy desecent when we turned around.

As the trail website says, its not well marked and you need to print out the site's useful maps. We rode hybrids with no trouble. Not suitable for road bikes. The surface is a somewhat rough dirt road with occasional nice views of the Wells River. New ice cream stand in Groton.
