Print Friendly MapThe Cumberland Connector begins at the eastern end of the popular Silver Comet Trail and continues east nearly 5 miles along the southern outskirts of Smyrna in the Atlanta metro region. The trail travels through commercial and residential areas, offering access along the way to various neighborhood destinations like the charming Oakdale Park. On the eastern end, the trail offers access to the sprawling Cumberland Mall near the interstate interchange - on the other side of this concrete jungle lies a different kind of wilderness, with the connecting Akers Mill Trail and the Rottenwood Creek Trail allowing you to explore a pocket of wooded, natural beauty along the Chattahoochee River.
On the trail's western end, you'll find a trailhead at Oakdale Park (4160 Atlanta Road). Also nearby is the Mavell Road Trailhead (4573 Mavell Road SE) at the starting point of the Silver Comet Trail. Both trailheads offer parking, restrooms, and water fountains. Another trailhead with parking only is available on Gaylor Street SE (near S. Cobb Drive).
On its eastern end, you can find parking surrounding the Cumberland Mall (located between Cobb Parkway and Cumberland Boulevard).
The Cumberland connector serves a vital function by making Silver Comet more accessible to surrounding areas. It is essentially a very wide two-lane sidewalk with dedicated street crossings. It makes it easy to ride a bike at a higher speed with sufficient room for passing other trail users. This type of trail should be emulated throughout Atlanta to facilitate commuting by bicycle off the overly congested roads.
