Donner Lake Rim Trail:
California
Trail Map
Description:
The Donner Lake Rim Trail will provide hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians with a multitude of recreational choices in a highly scenic and accessible area. When complete, 23 miles of trail will encircle Donner Lake high on the surrounding ridges, with stunning views of the Pacific Crest, Castle Peak, Mt. Rose and more.
The Donner Lake Rim Trail creates a vital link in the Town of Truckee Trails and Bikeways Master Plan. Trails will run from downtown Truckee west to Donner Summit and connect with existing trails leading south to the Granite Chief Wilderness and north to the proposed Castle Peak Wilderness.
The Truckee Donner Land Trust conceived the idea for this trail in the early 1990's and about one third of the trail has been completed, almost entirely by volunteer efforts. The Truckee Donner Land Trust hopes to complete the trail by 2010, but you can already enjoy hiking or riding from Tahoe Donner to Summit Lake. Already existing trails in the Truckee area are few and separated by miles of driving, while this project will literally allow backpacking from your back door.
Because a large portion of the trail crosses Schallenberger Ridge within Donner Memorial State Park, the Truckee Donner Land Trust is working closely with the California State Parks staff on trail planning, implementation and maintenance. The Truckee Donner Land Trust partnered with the Trust for Public Land to purchase over 2,000 acres including The Ridge, and tripling the size of the Park. In addition, the Truckee Donner Land Trust is coordinating trail construction with several other government agencies and private partners. Civic and service groups as well as local schools and businesses have volunteered thousands of hours to make the trail a reality.
The Truckee Donner Land Trust is taking a proactive approach to minimize erosion as well as long-term maintenance demands. Their standards are environmentally friendly. The Donner Lake Rim Trail also raises user awareness of the drainages that flow into Donner Lake and the Truckee River, as well as of historical and cultural landmarks in the area.
