Print Friendly MapThe Hiatus Road Greenway, which parallels the C-42 Canal, consists of just over 5 miles of multipurpose paved pathway between the cities of Sunrise and Plantation. The trail includes landscaping, benches, and signage in a suburban area.
On its northern end, the trail begins at Welleby Park, where you'll find a playground, volleyball pit, and picnic pavilions. On its southern end, the trail connects to the New River Greenway (also known as the Plantation Canal Path).
On the trail's southern end, parking can be found at the Plaza at Davie shopping center. From the complex, head north via the Hiatus Road sidewalk to the New River Greenway, then west a few feet and you'll find the southern trailhead of the Hiatus Road Greenway.
On its northern end, parking can be found at Wellby Park (11100 NW 44 Street). From the lot, follow the park trail, which will lead to the northern trailhead of the Hiatus Road Greenway. Restrooms and water also can be found at Wellby Park.
Altho it runs by a canal, there are undulating curves which improves on the monotony of a linear path. I parked at the northern end, the totally charming Wellby Park (bathrooms by the field on west end and over the footbridge to the east end). There is a gate on the western side to access the N-S running bike trail (gate is not on the map). Trail switches and sides a couple of times and the major intersections are long and dreary
A smooth, relaxing ride with only a few intersections to cross. Not the most exciting scenery but nice on a sunny day: saw MANY birds, lizards, and some cows and horses at farms. 12 miles total back and forth. One parking FYI: Welleby Park is undergoing expansion so one entrance is closed and you won’t be able to bike thru the park to trailhead. The expansion entrance is just around the corner; Easy enough to start the trail on Hiatus itself.
Nice. Quiet, clean and safe. I parked on the south end per the instructions and it was about 5.6 miles each way.
Friend and I went roller skating, super smooth a great time!
This is right in my backyard. It runs North/South along Haitus from Oakland to State Road 84. Then you can go East to University or West all the way to Markum Park. We’ve done 20 miles back and forth on this trail! There’s a couple of intersections you have to cross including Sunrise Blvd. but free and clear overall.
I went rollerblading on this trail today and I loved how clean and quiet it was.
For a city trail, this one is pretty good. I rode it on 7/22/18 .At first the scenery is just so-so but after the crossing at Oakland Park Blvd. it improves a lot. Very clean, with trees along the way if you need a break from the sun. Lots of large iguanas along the canal on the left going south, and there's no shortage of ducks. Some upscale homes to see on the right. The pavement is very smooth, very tight seams... you don't feel them at all. This is Florida, flat as a pancake... you won't get beautiful mountain scenery or anything like that, so my rating takes into consideration that this is a trail running through populated areas. The trail was not very heavily trafficked though. Very nice, all things considered.
When I decided to start walking again as my body started to heal from Epstein-Barr virus I discovered they put this path down across the street from my house basically. I used to work Hiatus Road before any work was done then it got obliterated by a new road and a lot of trees. Now I take my daily power walk on the greenway and I'm doing over seven miles total daily. It's a very peaceful path with lots of nature to experience, wide open and welcoming. Plus, I almost see no one.
Tried this path for first time, fantastic for inline speed skating - very wide made of silky smooth concrete. Skated on this and the linking new canal path for 30k. Hardly saw anyone. What a Jem!
Is the closest to my house and the one I always use to ride my bike. Love it!
This was my first time using a Greenway trail in Florida and it was a great experience. The running path is very wide and the view is not bad. You cross three major roads and Oakland Park is the only one that is kind of a pain. It had rained the night before and at the Northern portion by Welleby Park, parts of the sidewalk were not usable.
Overall a great run/walk/bike trail. There is no bathroom or water spots anywhere on the actual trail. If you need to go, make sure you hit up the park. At the end by Flamingo there is a Mobile Gas station so that's not a bad pit stop either.
The fresh concrete features tight expansion joints, almost no feedback at all, kudos to the engineers. The ride is peaceful and largely traffic free.
This trail just opened in 2015. The trail map is incorrect. The trail continues on the west side of the canal south of 29th Manor between Old Hiatus and the canal. Nice, wide concrete path. We rode this morning and there was plenty of activity in the form of cyclists, runners, walkers and some people fishing in the canals. The trail is adjacent to horse farms and I have seen horses near the trail on a previous ride.
The trail connects to the New River Greenway at the south end which can take you west to Markham Park or East towards Fort Lauderdale. Like all South Florida trails, the road crossings are not ideal and Oakland Park Blvd was the only inconvenient crossing.
