Description:
The Iron Horse Heritage Trail in Portage, Indiana, runs for 5 miles between Max Mochal Road (SR 149) at the east end and County Line Road near US 20 at the west end. The trail passes through a greenway corridor among suburban back yards, though with a decidedly rural feel. Much of the route is wooded, and the trail provides access to Imagination Glen Park and Woodland Park.

Just west of the eastern end point at SR 149, you can take a spur trail south to link with the Prairie Duneland Trail.

Phase 1 Spring 07'
By Colin Highlands in December, 2006
Spring of 2007 will mark the completion of the first phase of the Iron Horse Trail project and will cover roughly 2 miles. Eventually the trail will be developed to the city's western border and then make a bee line directly to Lake Michigan and the park departments new lakefront park. This will be one of the most exciting trail opportunities in Indiana if not the midwest once completed.
Good workout
By Blaine Hilton in March, 2002
"This trail isn't built yet, just the tracks removed. The trail is gravel and sand, the sand is the hardest to get through. By the end of this short 5 mile trek you'll feel it! The trail also connects to the trails at Imagaination Glen Park and if you go down the road a little ways you can link up with the Praire Duneland Trail."
