Description:
In April 2011 the Rio North Trail was renamed the Karen Cooper Trail in memory of a Flagstaff City Council member. The Karen Cooper Trail runs for 3.6 miles between W. Cherry Avenue just north of Wheeler Park in downtown Flagstaff and Freemont Avenue where it intersects Fort Valley Road (US 180). The generally follows the Rio de Flag to the Cheshire neighborhood northwest of town.
The trail passes traverses through willow-lined wetlands, reservoirs and ponds, as well among ponderosa pine stands and oak thickets, below the San Francisco Peaks. It also passes through the historic Townsite neighborhood at its southern end. Toward the north end, the trail courses the rim of the steep, rock-walled canyon of the Rio de Flag.
At the northern terminus, the Karen Cooper Trail meets up with the Fort Valley Trail. Near the southern terminus, in Thorpe Park, it meets the Mars Hill Trail.
