Marion County Trail (MCTrail) Description

The Marion County Trail—better known as the MCTrail—runs for nearly 3 miles along Pricketts Creek through rural Marion County. The trail's main highlight is a 1,200-foot lighted tunnel (Meredith Tunnel) under Speedway Avenue and Suncrest Boulevard.

The paved trail begins near Prickett's Fort State Park, a reconstructed fort originally built on the frontier of what was then known as Virginia in 1774. Less than a century later, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad came through, and it is upon this old right-of-way that the MCTrail sits. At Prickett's Fort, you can connect with the Mon River Trail South to continue into Morgantown.

Parking and Trail Access

Park on the north end of the MCTrail at Prickett's Fort State Park or on the south end on Morgantown Avenue in Fairmont.

Marion County Trail

I have never enjoyed a 2.5 mile trail more!

On a late October Saturday afternoon I was absolutely enthralled with this trail. I started at the Pricketts Fort trailhead and was immediately in awe of the spectacular autumnal colors: red, orange, yellow and gold!

The tunnel was fun and interesting, but the highlight was what Mother Nature created with the colorful trees, glistening Prickett creek. and the chirping birds.

The asphalt trail is in perfect condition and is easy to ride. I actually saw a couple of preschoolers enjoying it on their bikes with their families.

Be sure to do this in conjunction with the Mon River Trail to enhance your experience on these Hall of Fame trails!

Great, short trail!

Five star trail! It connects to the Mon River Rail Train network from Fairmont, WV to Morgantown, WV and beyond.

Great, short trail!

This trail is a great, short trail! If you want a longer ride, you can continue on the Mon River Trail Network, which starts at Pricketts Fort State Park and continues to Morgantown, WV and beyond.

Great Easy Ride

This is a really nice, fully paved, trail with easy access. We went in at the Fort Pricketts Trail Head. There is plenty of parking there with a bicycle repair stand and a shelter at the parking lot. There's easy access to restrooms across the small access road at the Prickett's Fort State Park. The trail is actually connected to the parking lot so it's just unload, get on the bike and start riding.
One end of the trail actually meets up with the Mon River Rail Trail which runs all the way into Morgantown. The other end of the trail is a little less than 3 miles away at Morgantown Avenue in Fairmont. The Meredith Tunnel is located about 1/2 mile from the Morgantown Ave trail head. It only lacks 40 yards of being 1/4 mile long and on a hot summer day, it'll really cool you off fast.

A great, easy trail.

Well maintained. Easy walking.

Easy for beginners. Nice scenery. Very fun (and a tunnel, to!)

Great trail for all ages!

This trail is great for all ages and stages of bikers. Beautiful setting and the tunnel is pretty cool. Not very long so doable for the kids.

Great Bike Trail

We took the whole family biking on this trail today. It is a very nice pathway that is paved. Our kids range from 1 up to 5. Our 5 year old was able to ride her tricycle and the 2 smaller kids rode in a pull behind trailer. My 5 year old was able to ride her tricycle for 2 miles with some stops.

Nice Ride

Nice trail for just getting started in biking. Good for families with young children. Easy to find. Well maintained. Very quaint. Short and sweet. very cool in tunnel.

Very Nice!

This is a dandy little trail! It is in pristine condition and paved the entire length. Pricket's Fort is an outstanding place of interest to begin a round trip bike-ride for the family. The ride is highlighted by a long, lit railroad tunnel.

When I rode through on July 27th, 2015, there was a dark section of tunnel where two lights were out (needs fixed) - which was a little spooky by myself.

I highly recommend this trail if you are in the mood for a short little 6 mile round trip jaunt.

Great Walking Trail

Prickett's Fort is a great place for a picnic and a short easy hike. The MCTrail goes up over the hill towards the Fairmont city limits. The path is paved (asphalt) and can be walked in about 50min. The 400m tunnel was built in 1914 and is impressive and cool in the summer months. I have lived in the area for many years and never knew there was such a tunnel under Speedway Ave. There are signs that name a few of the trees on the path, and birdhouses abound along the trail. The northern end of the park starts the Southern end of the Mon River Trail. Overall a great trail/path for the family.
