The Michigan Shore to Shore Riding & Hiking Trails stretches eastwest across the state between Empire and Oscado. A south spur takes off from eastern Grand Tranverse County and heads toward Cadillac. A north spur takes off from wester Oscoda County and heads toward Cheboygan. The natural surface trail was built for horseback riding and hiking; cycling is not permitted.
The western end begins in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The trail passes through a hardwoodconifer forest, along rivers (primarily the Au Sable) and among the many lakes and wetlands of central Michigan. The Shore to Shore Trail was developed and is maintained by Michigan Trail Riders, and there are several places to camp throughout its length.
