Midway Bike Path Description

Travel through the orchards south of Chico on the Midway Bike Path, which runs toward Durham on the abandoned Sacramento Northern Railway right-of-way. The trail is one of the most popular and scenic in the college town's rapidly expanding trail network.

The Sacramento Northern Railway once ran commuter service from Chico to Oakland and San Francisco via Sacramento. Various sections of the right-of-way have been converted to trail use, including the Chico Airport Bike Path on the northern edge of the city.

From the Midway Bike Path's northern end, take W. 20th Street to the designated bike route and lane on Salem Street to reach California State University, Chico (Chico State) and the city's downtown. From the trail's southern end, continue on low-stress Jones Avenue through seemingly endless orchards to reach downtown Durham.

Parking and Trail Access

There are no official parking areas for the Midway Bike Path, but parking may be found on adjacent residential streets in Chico. Be sure to obey any posted parking restrictions.

Midway Bike Path Reviews

midway ease

nice trail to use for the family outing or a quick ride if in town. it should be longer though! nice riding by the groves of almond trees!

From the Fairgrounds

If you call ahead to the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds and if nothing major is going on you can park in general parking lot, not in the gated area. From there you can ride down Fair Drive turn right onto East Park Avenue. Turn Left at where Midway meets East Park Avenue and look to the left for the entrance and cross the street at the light. Or simply cross over to East Park Avenue, ride the sidewalk to the entrance. You should have not trouble spotting the trail entrance.

Chico Durham Bike Path

Parking available at North end. This Path for the most part is along side the Midway Rd. However one section, just south of E. Park Ave and across Little Chico Creek, goes along a 200 ft Wall, with a Mural commissioned in 2004 by Chico Velo and the City of Chico, half depicting a serial view of the Chico Wildflower Century, and half the Wildflowers along the path. The two benches and display case were provided as an Eagle Scout Project. This Path provides views of Groves of English Walnut Trees grafted on Black Walnut stumps to take advantage of the better Black Walnut Roots. Noel Keller 5 Jun 10
