Trail Map
Description:
The Mississippi River Trail (MRT) is a seven-state 1,000 mile-long bike route beginning in St. Louis and ending in New Orleans. The MRT will ultimately extend 2,000 miles through 10 states from the Mississippi headwaters at Lake Itasca in Minnesota to New Orleans. The trail enables Americans to experience what writer Mark Twain described as the body of the nation". This trail honors one of the world's longest rivers that has nurtured a vast and rich agricultural region in the heart of our continent. For centuries, the Mississippi's waters have carried native peoples, fur traders, settlers and modern day tow pilots and crews. Its shores are home to nationally significant parks, museums, battlefields, historic sites, industry and some of America's most charming and picturesque towns and vibrant and colorful cities. The Mississippi River flood plain provides rich forests, wetlands and tilled fields, as well as habitat for nearly 40 percent of the North American continent's migratory birds. The Mississippi River has served as a source of inspiration for much of America's cultural heritage, particularly in the fields of music and literature.
