Shortest of 3 trails out of downtown Morgantown
By TedB in October, 2010
Paved trail to the Morgantown city limits; smooth, wide cinders to the state line. Don’t hesitate to continue on north into Pennsylvania to Point Marion. The trail is significantly rougher, but was OK on our tandem (700 x 1.25” wide tires @ 80 psi). It’s only about ¾ mile until you get to a paved section that passes through a recreation field/park which then leads into Point Marion. Grab sandwiches and/or drinks at the Subway in town.
star city to the wv/pa state line
By ArtB in August, 2009
one day i was feeling rather good enough to bike the caperton trail from star city north to the wv/pa state line. approx. 6.5 miles. i started at the star city park & began to take pictures. at a steady slow pace, as to take in the views & to rest, i truly got to enjoy some of the most beautiful summer scenic views i've ever seen on the mon river. i was really scouting places to fish but soon got wrapped up into all the wonderous glory of nature. as a local native, i've been up & down the railroad tracks of both sides of the river when i was a kid. fishing of course. but i've never been below star city on that side of the river. oh yeah, i've seen it from the other side, but it was from a distance of the width of the river. so much was i missing. now with this trail into place, i finally got to see it all up close. i stopped at the wv/pa state line due to the trail not being so smooth as the wv side of the trail. i hope to go to point marion & travel up the cheat river someday by way of this same trail. i must admit the only thing i didn't enjoy on this adventure was coming to spots where a few individials had rutted the trail with 4 wheelers. something totally forbidden on the trails, but i guess there are a few who don't care about others & the rules. nor do they care about all the hard work done by those who maintain these trails for all our enjoyment. overall, this was an excellent day.
Nice, Easy Trail
By IronLenny in September, 2008
My wife and I look to travel and often do multiday cycling on Rail Trails. While attending a triathlon in Morgantown earlier this Spring I happened to notice that several Rail Trails started at the same point in Morgantown down by the Wharf area (at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park) almost like spokes on a wheel. This would make it wothwhile for us to travel from Charlotte. We left at 6:00 am and drove the 7 hrs and after checking in to our hotel for the next three days (Hotel Morgan) we set out to ride the Mon Trail North section. We started at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Park at MP 10 and cycled north. The first part of the trail is actually called the Caperton trail until the pavement ends at approx. MP 6 . You cycle along the Mononghela River and the views are very scenic. Takes you back to the old days when river travel was prevalent. The trail ends at MP 0 which is the PA/WV state line. The map shows future plans to extend it into PA and eventually link it up with the Great Allegheny Trail. What a great ride that could become. The trail condition is excellent with a nice tight crushed limestone. Total for the day 20 miles with 2.5 hrs of riding tme.
