Description:
From the Trail Website (www.ngpc.state.ne.us/parks/trails): High on the bluffs where the Niobrara and Missouri rivers meet, Niobrara State Park commands a wide view of the tree-covered river valley. Here, 12 miles of trails are available for equestrian, biking, hiking and cross-country skiing.

The old Chicago Northwestern Railroad bridge, which spans 1,200 feet of the Niobrara River, is now part of a 2.1-mile hike/bike trail and also serves many anglers.

All trail surfaces are mowed grass except for the 2.1 mile Niobrara River Trail and the 1 mile Deer Creek Trail. These trails have a chipped limestone surface and they are designated as disabled accessible.

The Niobrara Trail is a 2.1 mile hike/bike trail that traverses the entire northern boundary of the park and offers some unique views of the timbered river bluffs and wetland areas. The eight-foot wide limestone surfaced trail is handicap accessible and features a fishing bridge across the Niobrara River. In winter, this trail is open to cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. Horses are allowed along the side of this trail.

Deer Creek Trail is a 1-mile limestone surfaced handicap accessible trail that runs through the middle of the picnic and tent area. This trail has three wood constructed bridges. This trail runs in and out of a valley filled with a variety of trees and wildlife. The Ameri-corps Team built this trail in 1997.

The Cabin Ridge to River Access Trails are the most difficult in the park with steep hills and ravines. These trails lend access to The Niobrara Trail. In 1995, Park Superintendent Steve Kemper, marked out elevation and trail lengths.

Ask the park for maps.

There are approximately 160 acres of open equestrian riding located in native grassland with rolling hills, primitive camping facilities include a non-modern restroom, picnic table and grill. There are no corrals or water in this aarea. A minimum camping fee is charged.

Niobrara Trail
By twirlymaker in October, 2009
Drove to Niobrara State Park to find that the Missouri River was running high and closed off the road to Trailhead. A land side closed it off from the west as well as a locked gate.
