Northwestern Pacific Rail Trail Description

The Northwestern Pacific (NWP) Rail Trail was built along the North Coast Railroad Authority's right-of-way in Ukiah in 2015 as acknowledgment that city residents had been using the rail corridor as an informal transportation route for years. Now a formal asphalt path legally welcomes trail users to the centrally located corridor, with lights even allowing for use after dark.

The open portion of the trail spans the less-than-1-mile distance between Gobbi Street and Clara Avenue, with the portion between Perkins Street and Clara Avenue built closer to the track to accommodate redevelopment of land adjacent to Mason Street that was formerly occupied by rail spurs. Sidewalks and bike lanes on Gobbi Street allow for easy access to points east and west from the trail's current southern endpoint.

In the near future, the NWP Rail Trail will be extended south along the rail line another 0.8 mile to Ukiah's rapidly developing retail core on Commerce Drive. Future phases may extend the trail significantly farther north to Willits and south to Hopland as part of the proposed Mendocino Rail-with-Trail project.

Parking and Trail Access

There are no official parking areas for the Northwestern Pacific Rail Trail, but ample parking is available on nearby city streets. Be sure to obey any posted parking restrictions.
