Shaw Rail-Trail Description

One of a handful of western Mississippi communities to salvage a benefit from the abandonment of a 50-mile railroad corridor between Cleveland and Hollandale in 1999, Shaw railbanked the portion of the line through their small city to provide a paved trail for local residents. The corridor was originally built by the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad before being merged into the Illinois Central Railroad and ultimately ending up under the control of the Columbus and Greenville Railway.

The Shaw Rail-Trail is a short loop trail resembling a compressed running track between White Oak Street and Elm Street. The surrounding area is landscaped, and lights, benches and a covered pavilion make the trail and adjacent park a pleasant place to exercise or relax.

Other trails on the same former rail corridor include the Boyle Rail-Trail, Cleveland's Crosstie Walk, the Renova Heritage Walking Trail, Shelby Trails and Duncan Walking Trail to the north and the Hollandale Rail-Trail to the south.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Shaw Rail-Trail is available at a trailhead on White Oak Street. Shaw is located off US 61/278 northeast of Greenville, between Cleveland and Leland.

Shaw Rail-Trail Reviews

The trail has been poorly maintained and has declined along with the surrounding neighborhood. Shaw was my starting point on a rail trail tour & road ride heading north to Duncan.
