Baltimore’s Stony Run Trail follows an old Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad line through nearly 3 miles of wooded stream valleys and small parks, providing a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The unique urban trail sits on the former rail bed next to Stony Run, which flows into the longer Jones Falls. At the confluence of the two streams, the Stony Run Trail meets the Jones Falls Trail.
The Stony Run Trail passes through 15 residential neighborhoods, including Roland Park, Hampden, Remington and Tuscany-Canterbury, providing residents with quick and easy access to this tree-lined oasis. It is not uncommon to see families out for a stroll, college students going for a jog or nature lovers glimpsing the great blue herons wading in the stream.
The trail intersects or abuts Loyola University, Johns Hopkins University, 3 city parks and 5 schools, providing a great way to access these local institutions and leafy Olmsted-designed communities while enjoying a walk along the stream. Recently, local environmental organization Blue Water Baltimore has led an initiative to install native plants along the stream, which has brought renewed attention to the trail.

It is a gorgeous trail. However, it is narrow, it has sudden dips, and there is coarse gravel on the path, throughout. Tree roots abound. There are places where someone has placed wooden platforms in the middle of the path, which are nearly impossible to avoid, and cannot be ridden over! I will return and walk the dog, but I'll never attempt to ride it again (after wiping out 3 times, very painfully).
What a great place to take a walk through our City neighborhoods. Secluded and peaceful. You can have a great picnic lunch along the stream or stop at a bench near the stream.
Great hidden gem in our City!
Very beautiful gem within North Baltimore. Easy to access, but most segments feel secluded from the surrounding neighborhoods. It's a very peaceful walk/hike/run/etc. that deserves to be protected and stewarded.
I like this trail because it's close to home and convenient. Connects Hampden, Remington and a little of Charles village. Some cool graffiti to be seen and bridges to go under but LOTS of broken glass.
