Description:
The Switcback Trail is a moderate loop trail constructed along portions of the abandoned Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain Railroad grade. It offers good views, scattered wooded areas and meadows with wildflowers in season. The lower end of this trail has a shelter and explanatory sign describing the historic 'switchback' on the railroad which is in the Guinness Book of World Records. In addition, a pedestrian bridge crosses over US highway 82, allowing a safer option to cross the road.

The trail may be linked with the Trestle Trail system to make a more challenging, larger loop of approximately 8 miles.
