Trolley Trail (Waterloo) Description

Black Hawk County’s Trolley Trail, also known as the Trolley Car Trail, runs for less than 2 miles in western Waterloo. The trail is the lone vestige of the Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northern Railway’s passenger service, which linked Waterloo with Cedar Falls along a scenic route in the first half of the 20th century. The line had a reputation for never stopping service, even during unrelenting blizzards.

The trail is paved for a short distance along US 218, but eventually switches to a natural surface as it extends westward. Most of the route is a serene trek through the densely-wooded Castle Hill neighborhood. At North Hackett Road, the trail crosses an old trolley bridge.

Near the Trolley Trail’s midpoint, a short trip up the Greenhill Trail leads cyclists and pedestrians to the South Riverside Trail, which continues farther west along the Cedar River to Cedar Falls.

Parking and Trail Access
