Description:
In 2001/2002, the Town of Vestal converted a 2.1-mile section of abandoned Delaware-Lackawana & Western Railroad right-of-way into an alternative transportation route for pedestrian and bicycle travel. The trail consists of a 12-foot paved lane for bicycles, skates and wheelchairs and an 8-foot unpaved surface for pedestrian use. A 20-space parking lot at the east end of the trail and a 10-space lot at the west end of the trail will be completed by summer 2002. The trail is fully ADA accessible.

The state Department of Transportation owns 1.24 miles of the right-of-way and has granted Vestal a permanent easement; the Newman Development Group owned the remaining .86 miles of the right-of-way, which it donated to the town. The Town of Vestal Parks and Highway Departments maintains the trail.

The trail provides a much needed alternative for non-motorized travel. It parallels NY Route 434, a busy signalized arterial that, until the trail was constructed, had no parallel alternate route.

The western terminus is near Vestal High School; both endpoints are adjacent to retail malls, yielding economic benefit to area merchants. The trail should enhance the quality of life in the area, which previously had no such facilities.

For more information on this trail, call the Town of Vestal at 607-748-1514.

Vestal Rail Trail, Vestal, NY

This is a very popular 2 mile trail for locals out for a stroll, roller blading, casual biking, dog walking. Numerous benches along the route. There is also a 1/2 mile long nature walk which loops around an adjoining wetlands, with a bird platform observatory. Trail runs past Twin Orchards Town Park and playground. Nice family area. Ample parking at either end, with shops in close proximity. Plans to extend trail further west are under review.
