Walking Dunes Trail Description

True to its name, the Walking Dunes Trail offers a pleasant hike through the dunes of Cape Henlopen State Park—specifically the “walking dunes,” which slowly move across the park. Unlike some of the other trails in the area, this trail has a firm crushed gravel surface with gentle grades for most of the way.

Sand isn't the only scenery along the Walking Dunes Trail: much of the route passes through woodlands and tidal marsh. Still, the biggest draw is undoubtedly the Great Dune, which towers 80 feet above sea level at the trail's northwestern edge.

The paved Cape Henlopen State Park Bike Loop runs concurrent to the Walking Dunes Trail near the park's campground, while the rustic Salt Marsh Spur bisects the trail on its course from the Biden Center to tidal marshlands. Along Dune Road, the Gordons Pond Trail parallels the Walking Dunes Trail on its route south.

Parking and Trail Access

To access Cape Henlopen State Park from downtown Lewes, Delaware, follow Savannah Road and signs for the Lewes Terminal that provides ferry trips to Cape May, New Jersey. Turn right on Cape Henlopen Drive and follow it to the park entrance. There is a $10 park entry fee for automobiles (in-state drivers pay $5). Parking is available at the Herring Point trailhead along Dune Road.
