Wolftever Creek Greenway Description

The Wolftever Creek Greenway is a sparkling gem in the city of Collegedale. Construction began in 1998, and as of 2011, more than 4 miles of greenway, part of which is along a railroad right-of-way, have been built.

The greenway offers a lot of interesting features for trail users, including the Imagination Station Playground, a Nature Nook, a dog park and picnic tables. In addition, you'll find fountains in ponds, artistically shaped benches (a butterfly and train), old wagon wheels, bicycles and plows made into planters and plenty of birdfeeders. At the old mill site there is a remodeled wagon.

In a nod to the days when men used to sit by the old train tracks and whittle, the city now provides a whittling bench. If whittling doesn't take your fancy, you can always do a bit a trainspotting from the train-shaped bench. At Veterans Park there's an outdoor movie theater, and during the season they park hosts the Arts in the Park Festival and East Hamilton Symphony and Orchestra performances.

Begin your explorations of the delightful Woftever Creek Greenway at the Imagination Station Playground behind City Hall. From here the trail goes underneath Apison Pike, intersects Wolftever Creek and continues to the pond on Ooltewah-Ringgold Road. From here you cross a bridge over the road then turn east on the other side of Wolftever Creek to Spalding Drive. From Spalding Drive, cross Tucker Road to the Nature Nook, located at Tallant Road and Apison Pike.

For now, the trail ends on Southern Adventist University property near Tallant Road. Future plans to extend the trail will include a Robinson Farm connection, which will travel along the railroad, and another segment that will run from Apison Pike to Landrem subdivision.

Parking and Trail Access

In Collegedale, parking is available at The Nature Nook (at the intersection of Tallant Road and Apison Pike) and at the Tucker Road Recreational Area (at the intersection of Tucker Road and Apison Pike).

Wolftever Creek Greenway

This greenway in Collegedale (Ooltewah) is well maintained and a pleasure to ride a bike through the whole Greenway path. Caution: lots of road construction near the path in places. Highly recommend this venue. Wonderful playground for young children!

family friendly

Family friendly, paved the entire way, offers lots of shade.

Nice trail

Family friendly trail. Things to see and do: ponds with ducks and fountains. streams. Three playgrounds throughout the trail. Lots of shade. Bridges. Two tunnels. I went often during the week and it wasn't crowded. The traffic getting to the parking lot was bad though. I went around 4-5pm when a lot of people were going home from work. Overall, great trail for the family or the individual.

Great 3 miles!

Weekends are REALLY busy here but on a weekday the whole trail can be yours alone. Weekends are for walking and weekdays are for biking. It meandors by the creek and the active railroad and winds up behind a shopping complex, still a good ride/walk.

Lovely setting but not bike friendly

We took our bikes on this trail yesterday. It was a beautiful, sunny Saturday and many people were using the trail. It's a lovely setting as it travels beside Wolftever Creek with several charming parks along the way. There was even a comfort station at the parking area where we could change clothes. We did not find the trail very bike friendly however. The concrete path is wide enough for two people to walk abreast, but not comfortably wide enough for bikers to get by them safely. It also has a number of sharp turns which require difficult maneuvering. There were very few cyclists using the trail and it was easy to understand why. Beside the sharp turns and slender width, the trail was full of walkers who have no idea of bike/pedestrian curtesy. We often had to stop and wait for them to move over so we could continue past them or simply wait until they moved on. There were loads of children running all over the trail which made dodging them difficult. I would say this is a great trail for walkers and runners, but I won't be biking it again.
