Description:
The Yadkin River Greenway is a work in progress, currently in three segments that have yet to be joined. Construction will take place during summer 2011.
The first segment of the greenway begins at the D Street bridge in North Wilkesboro and follows the west bank of the Reddies River to the Yadkin River. A pedestrian bridge crosses the Reddies River near its mouth and extends to near Mid-Town Market in North Wilkesboro.
The main greenway heads west up the Yadkin River to the Wellness Center in West Park, North Wilkesboro. You'll find another pedestrian bridge over the Yadkin to downtown of Wilkesboro.
The second segment of the Yadkin River Greenway continues to follow the Yadkin River on the south bank, from Moravian Creek in Wilkesboro to the Wilkes Family YMCA. Plans are to extend the greenway across the river to W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, a distance of 5.7 miles. This will link to the third segment, which begins at the end of Old Highway 268 near the dam by the reservoir. This segment loops around the Yadkin River through the forest on the north bank.
Additional future plans include extending the Greenway from the Cornerstone trailhead along the river east to Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro then on to Smoot Park. For trail updates, visit the Yadkin River Greenway Council.
