The Arizona Canal Trail is one of the longer multi-use trails in Maricopa County. This trail runs for 16 miles between Phoenix and Peoria along the Arizona Canal, one of the counties vital waterways. The trail is largely continuous along a number of parallel pathsways adjacent to the concrete-lined channel. It provides access to a large number of residences, commercial centers, schools and other recreational opportunities.The trail connects to a number of other trails along its route, including the New River Trail, the Cave Creek Trail, and the Skunk Creek Trail.

This trail is a greenway corridor though the city of Gilbert, just outside Mesa and Phoenix. The trail runs from the Eastern Canal at Crossroads Park north to Baseline Rd. The trail passes through a number of residential communities and provides an excellent recreational opportunity for nearby residents, while providing a connection to the numerous businesses along Baseline Rd.

The Cave Creek Trail is a paved multi-use trail along the banks of Cave Creek in Phoenix. The trail consists of three disconnected segments, the largest of which is the southern section. This section also traverses Cave Creek Park and connects to the Arizona Canal Trail. The middle section connects to the Cave Creek Tributary Trail, while the northern section provides access to Werner's Field Park. All three sections provides access to residences, businesses, and other recreational opportunities.

This trail serves to connect the communities of Litchfield Park and Goodyear, just outside of Phoenix. This utilitarian-style path parallels Indian School Rd. and Litchfield Rd., passing parks, business, and residences along the way.

McDowell Mountain Regional Park has more than 50 miles of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails, ranging from easy to strenuous and ranging from 0.5 mile to 15.4 miles. Most trails are shared use and there is one barrier-free trail. The park also has three competitive mountain bike loops totaling 14 miles. The park is open every day of the year; user fees apply.

The Paseo Trail runs north-south along the Consolidated Canal, an 18-mile-long waterway dating back to 1891. On the east side of the canal, the trail is paved, while the west side -- popular with horseback riders -- is mostly gravel with some asphalt. The gentle-grade path connects Chandler to Gilbert as it winds through neighborhoods, farms and parks. Waterfowl and fish can be spotted in the canal and fishing is permitted. The trail ends at the Paseo Vista Recreation Area, a 64-acre park atop a former landfill that offers a large archery facility, playground and disc golf.

The Squaw Peak Highway Trail in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve northwest to Scottsdale provides a unique mix of industrial and scenic. The trail begins along N. 32 Street at Mountain View Road, paralleling Piestewa Freeway/State Route 51 for a short way. The trail leads up and over the mostly barren hillside to end at where Dreamy Draw Drive and SR 51 intersect. There is not much shade but you find shelters at the trailhead parking on Dreamy Draw Drive. The preserve includes a system of mountain bike trails but use caution in areas of loose rocks and 6+ inch drop-offs.
