The Huron Sunrise Trail follows the shore of Lake Huron from south of Rogers City, through town and north to end at 40 Mile Lighthouse. The scenic trail links the town with Vogler Conservation Area, a 270-acre forest preserve (which also has many trails for hiking and mountain biking), Hoeft State Park and 40 Mile Lighthouse, which includes a museum and a picnic area. For more details on each segment of the trail, visit Top of Michigan Trails.

Parking and Trail Access

Park at 40 Mile Lighthouse (7 miles north of Rogers City on US 23; note: go past 40 Mile Point Rd. and turn east on County Park Road), Rogers City Marina at Lakeside Park and at the ball fields off Calcite Road.

Huron Sunrise Trail Reviews

My husband and I rode this and it was fantastic. So glad the space is claimed along the Lake Huron shoreline for this paved trail. We want a similar trail close to Alpena.

Lovely trail

This is a lovely trail, well marked and lots of beautiful sites. It starts it a small city park on the south side of town and end at 40 Mile Lighthouse! The trail takes you thru beautiful forests, parks, a small portion of the city, Lake Huron, passing Hoeft State Park, which you can also go into and explore and over some small picturesque bridges. Highly recommend!

Best trail we have ridden so far. We'll marked and fairly flat till you reach 40 mile Lighthouse. 7.6 miles from marina downtown to light house.

A Beautiful, easy to follow trail on Hwy 23

We have been traveling north on historic Highway 23 for several days and were on the lookout for a good bike trail. For us, a good bike trail is always paved in some manner, minimal time on roadways (and never on a bike lane of a major thoroughfare) and one where you can at least get about 12-15 miles in. We’d been struggling to accomplish this in this part of the state when I found the Huron Sunrise trail on Trail Link. What a completely perfect ride this is! You follow along the coast of Lake Huron (though not for the whole ride). The forest sections are truly lovely. The trail is only steep in a couple weeks f places. We rode from Rogers City Marina to 40 mile lighthouse and back and the steep parts are right at the entrance to 40 Miles Lighthouse. Best of all, when the trail jogged right or left, the course was clearly marked which made for a fun and relaxing ride. Could not recommend this ride enough!

Enjoyable ride¿¿

What a beautiful trail! I rode from Rogers City to 40 Mile Point Lighthouse, very well maintained and singed. A+ in my book.

Nice trail, nice scenery

Pleasant, mainly flat trail from Rogers City along the Huron Lake out to 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. Very pretty. Trail wasn't crowded on a Wednesday evening.

Great ride!

I would suggest starting at the baseball field parking lot north of the calcite plant then riding north to 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. Next time I will pack a cooler and swim suit so that when I end back at the ball field beach, I’ll spend the afternoon!

amazing!

A gem, lightly used trails and remote beaches: romantic ride!

Beautiful, easy ride along Lake Huron to a lovely lighthouse

We rode this trail with friends on Labor Day weekend and we're so glad we did. The only downside was that it was too hot and humid to fully enjoy being on asphalt in the hard sun. On a milder day, this would be even more fun.

We started at Seagull Point Park because we weren't interested in riding through the downtown area or marina. You have to ride north down the road out of the park parking lot to pick up the trail crossing. After that, it's a nice relatively flat ride most of the way, meandering through woods, the lakeshore, and just a few bits along US-23 (but not on the road shoulder... the bike path is still there!) After you pass Hoeft S.P. you will soon be at the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. That is the only place you'll find a couple bigger hills to negotiate both ways. I'm no athlete and had no problem with them. I did walk up on the return because the hill rises right from the lighthouse grounds with no chance to "build steam"!

Do take time to enjoy the 40 Mile Point light. The Fresnel lens at the top of the tower is worth the climb. It's like a piece of art itself ... the grounds offer many historical/interpretive points, a gift shop, and a soda/Gatorade machine that, for us anyway, dispensed beverages so cold they had ice bits in them. Perfect for that hot day!

The only thing we wished we'd have done was wear our bathing suits under our clothes so we could stop for a dip ... there are many opportunities to do so and it would have felt great.

All in all, an excellent short round trip trail for all skill levels and ages!

Beautiful August ride

My aunt and I rode this and it was a very easy, fun ride. Lots of scenic views of Lake Huron! Great short ride, few inclines, paved the whole way.

Nice August Ride

My wife and I rode this trail on a beautiful August day. The trail is very scenic so we took our time and enjoyed the views. Our turn around spot was the marina at Rogers City. We ate a hamburger at the Pavilion Grill by the marina. The trail is mostly flat with a few small inclines. A steeper incline by the lighthouse but its over before you get too tired. A good feature of this trail is the fact that it is NOT isolated. I would let my daughter ride or walk this trail by herself. It is worth the drive to Rogers City. You will enjoy the trail.

Beautiful vistas

Short but spectacular bike trail. It hugs the Lake Huron shoreline most of the way..

Great Trail!

This is an awesome trail to ride. So very beautiful. We took our color tour on this trail and had some stunning views. It's a fairly easy trail to ride but, it does have some inclines, one just before you get to 40 Mile Piont Lighthouse! I am giving this trail 4 stars instead of 5 because it could be better marked especially when you have to turn onto a road for a small distance. We couldn't tell where to go when we got there, turned around and ended up taking a spur trail. while very beautiful, not what we were looking for. Finally was able to ask someone and got directions. Definetely worth the trip! The views of Lake Huron is stunning!Would definitely ride again.

Nice variety for a shorter trail

I cycled this trail from the Rogers City Marina to the 40 Mile Point lighthouse on a misty, cold, windy day. Depsite the crummy conditions, this trail was very enjoyable. It went through town, north through some quiet neighborhoods, through forested areas, next to Lake Huron, and some hilly areas at the end near the lighthouse. For fun, you can also take a swing through PH Hoeft State Park, which is on the route.

Note that when traveling north, you will cross a road called 40 Mile Point Rd. To get to the lighthouse, don't take this road, just keep on the cycling path. It ends (with signage) at the lighthouse area.

There are stretches that are next to US-23, but the road is not busy and you are still on a dedicated paved path.

I would love to go back sometime on a sunny day to fully enjoy the views of Lake Huron.

We stayed in Gaylord, MI so that we were 1 hour 15 minutes from several nice trails. This one was near the top of our list. About half of the trail is on the lakeshore. The rest is through the woods or along highway 23. Park in the city park and ride to the lighthouse. There is a nice place to relax and a museum with history. If your legs are rested, climb to the top of the lighthouse to see the original lens. We highly recommend Scill's Grill downtown for lunch and a treat at Three Hearts Bakery on Hwy 23. Nice quiet town with marina.

Nice trail to blade, go for a run or bike ride

This is one of the most scenic trails in northern michigan. Make sure you go all the way north to the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. It has a great beach and take a trip up the tower. The 40 Mile Point Lighthouse group has done an excellent job restoring/preserving it. Don't forget to ride the spur trails into the conservation area as well as the state park.

Huron-Sunrise Trial

Wife and I rode trail on June 25, 2011 and loved it and recommend it.

Once ones gets past the town of Rogers City one rides through woods and then along Lake Huron for maybe a mile within a stone's throw. Trail ends at a State Park. Trail is very smooth.
