Great day for a ride

Back into biking again we found this trail a great ride. Very little motorized traffic and all those where very courteous to us on bikes. Driven by this trail many times and never knew it was there. Hard to believe that your never more than a few yards for a road, but you hardly every hear the traffic. Lots of history and great views. Take a trip to northern Maine and enjoy this trail.

Must Read Carefully

Didn't absorb the fact that eastbound from Presque Isle that the trail is private. After barely riding over a short bridge with exposed spaces between the planks and nails sticking out, I came across a section that was mudded out (in late July) and the ATVs had run over posted signs stating that the soils were too saturated for use. I turned west and it was much better. Hard packed dirt, smooth sailing. At worst there were a few rocky areas but nothing major. Very little horsefly activity when compared to the Ellsworth end of the Sunrise trail. Very well-maintained by the Star City ATV club.

A wonderful trail!

We rode this trail June 5, 2020, from Fort Kent to St. Francis. We found the trail to be in excellent shape (hard packed crushed stone) and well maintained. Given its great condition, we did not find riding our e-bikes on this trail to be a challenge. There are some beautiful views of the St. John River about half way into the trail. Ours was an early morning ride, allowing for a glimpse of various wildlife along the way - a family of raccoons, a Green Heron, Bald Eagles, Pileated Woodpeckers, and other birds. Aside from seeing two ATV's, we had the entire trail to ourselves. We plan to ride it again this fall.

Bangor and Aroostook Trail

We drove up to the county , to try out one of the rail trails. Finding appropriate parking took a little bit. The trail was beautiful. Quiet journey through the main woods. The ATVers were great. Sharing the trail and information. All in all a really fun day. Hybrid tires are a must. Don't try this with road tires.

Great Mountain Biking Trail

Rode the trail from New Sweden to Presque Isle and back on a Sunday. Of the four rails to trails I've done so far in Maine this was my favorite. There is no official parking at the New Sweden trail head but there is a church just up the road with a large parking lot. The trail can be a little bumpy at times due to some larger rocks but the firmness of the trail more than makes up for it and is what makes it so great and so easy to move quickly if you want. There is plenty of great scenery from remote forest to large rivers and small marshes and some towns. It gets a little tricky to stay on the trail in Ashland. You navigate onto the Bangor Aroostook trail just before and I missed the turn back onto the Aroostook Valley. The rails to trails map is right on but I missed it. As a result had to back track a few miles to get back on the Aroostook Valley. They had some major storms recently in the area and there were several trees down. The ATVers which I assume were part of the clubs did a phenomenal job clearing the trails literally as I was riding them. Great job guys!

Excellent Mountain Bike Trail

Rode the trail end to end on a Saturday. Only saw a couple of ATVs. The trail is firmly packed the entire way making for a great ride with no extra effort. You can really make great time as a result. What a beautiful trail. You go through the small town of Kent and soon are in the middle of some beautiful forest. About half way you reach the river which provides for great views for several miles to the end. You can get some great pictures of New Brunswick Canada just on the other side of the river. The river separates the US and Canada and you pretty much follow the border the entire way. This trail is at the very top of Maine but if you get up there I recommend you give this one a try. One note on trail head location. The trail introduction talks about being behind the gas station but there are a few of these on Market street. The trail is actually right behind a little store / pharmacy on the left side leaving town. About .75 miles. I stayed in Edmundston Canada which is only about 18 miles away but there are many smaller places on the US side I wished I looked up before committing to the Best Western. Anyway it is a great hotel. Off to the Aroostock Valley Trail.

A two-trail system

"Please note that there are actually two distinct trails in this system. One is the Bangor/Aroostook Trail and the other is the Aroostook Valley Trail. The Bangor/Aroostook Trail currently runs from Mapleton to Van Buren on the south and west side of the area and from Caribou to Stockholm and then on to Van Buren on the east side.

The Aroostook Valley Trail connects to the Bangor/Aroostook Trail in Washburn and has trail heads in Mapleton, Caribou and New Sweden. The Bangor/Aroostook Trail is approximately 61 miles and the Aroostook Valley Trail is approximately 25.5 miles."
