Rode this on 6/13/24 with a friend, covering 20 miles. Parked at the Ropewalk Pavilion, 4601 Annapolis Rd, Bladensburg. Restroom here was clean. Trail is well marked with trail signs except for about 1/2 mile were you are traveling through a neighborhood on the streets. Lots of turns and small hills make it pleasant to ride allowing you to rest some while coasting. Most if the paved trail is only about 6 feet wide so you need to stay on your own side especially at the blind turns. Condition of the asphalt was good although some of the boardwalks were a little rough. This trail takes you past some beautiful scenery in MD and DC. There was a 400 yard section by the Wash Navy Yard where you are supposed to walk your bike.
Long, mostly straight, subtle gentle hills, nice views, and a reasonably low amount of road crossings. My personal go-to for long runs.
Trail in disrepair about 1 mile from trailhead basically unpassable looks like it's been that way for a while :(
We had heard good things about this trail, and were able to visit and ride circa 26 miles out and back yesterday, (June 4). This is a wonderful and very scenic trail with amazing views of the river and bucolic landscape. Much of the trail is shaded which helped during the heat but also adds to the allure of the trail. The Trail Welcoming Center is well maintained and the staff there very friendly and helpful. In addition, the rest room(s) were immaculate! I can't recommend this trail highly enough, and we will absolutely, (the Good Lord Willing), return to ride anytime we have the opportunity! Thanks for developing and maintaining such a marvelous and beautiful venue for relaxing and enjoying nature at its finest. We also stopped and had lunch at a wonderful tavern about 10 miles from the Welcome Center that is right along the trail. Very welcoming, great food, and very friendly clientele! Fantastic all around Great Experience!
With the exception of the mile just north of Mt Vernon, all the root cracks have been ground down to nearly smooth. Would probably be acceptable on a road bike, but more comfortable on hybrid or gravel bike.
We parked at lock 38 by Shepardstown. Trail is well maintained and gorgeous. Many bikers, runners and walkers out.Note it is a trash free park.
Just completed York to Maryland . Stopped in Railroad to spend the night at The Jackson House B and B. Great place. Ale Craft brewery nearby was excellent. Coming south through York was a bit of a challenge. We got off trail twice for a short period. Needs to be better marked
What an amazing trail. Beautiful scenery, smooth, lots of areas to take a break, or break the trail up. Great for new riders.
Definitely not for biking the whole way, but nice for a short hike. Good view of the river! Without looking at the map, we took the steeper right trail at the first marked intersection that just showed it going to the overlook. That side trail is confusing without a map, as we ended up in a dead end without a view and had to backtrack a little and then the path ended up on the main trail. If you don't want to have to climb over a very short section of rocks at the end to see the western view, this path wouldn't be for you.
Whether a multi-day ride from DC 180 miles to Cumberland or individual day rides along the tow path next to the C&O canal, this trail is awesome. And now that much of it has been resurfaced to be crushed granite rather than just dirt, muddy rides will no longer be a problem after and during rains. One of the top 10 bucket list rides in the US, easily.
We rode this trail on a sunny spring Sunday. The trail is beautiful, the only problems are its total lack of shade and its short length. Looking forward to when this trail is completed.
Very easy to find the trail from any of the nearby red line stops which allows for easy segmenting if you don’t want to do the entire trail. Very runner friendly the entire way. It’s a great resource to have in the middle of the city.
