Northern Rail Trail

The best rail trail in the state

October, 2016 by mrchuffy

This trail is easily ridable from end to end in a day: the surface is quite good esp compared to other rail trails in the state and there are plenty of services along the way not far off the trail. Its also interesting in that there are many bridges, scenic views, points of interest (like Potter Place) and its mostly rural. Try it, I think youll not be disappointed!

DoverBike

September, 2016 by dovertrail

We Broke this into a few sections and rode the entire trail this year. Canaan to Danbury was slightly overgrown on the Canaan end(need a Mt. Bike)but the rest was great. Good places to stop along the way. Our favorites are JJ's pizza in Franklin and Salt Hill Tavern in Lebanon. Don't pass this trail up, it is one of the best around.

Toonerville Rail-Trail

ok but not great

August, 2016 by andrewhelan

Directions to the Hoyt's Landing traihead are poor. Should say, "small sign on the Vermont side, just before you cross the Connecticut River into New Hampshire."
This trail is nicely paved, but too industrial and too many cars for our taste. Vermont is late to the casual biking game and doesn't seem to place much if any emphasis on it. Happily, New Hampshire is just the opposite (figuratively and literally.) Many fine trails in New Hampshire. Vermont: Get with It.

Warren County Bikeway

Warren County Bikeway

August, 2016 by dillar

We started in Lake George and rode south hoping to ride the trail in it's length. It is beautifully paved and provided a nice smooth ride. The first 2 miles or so from the Lake are all uphill. After that it was a nice ride all the way down to the outlets in Queensbury. We continued past the outlets to south of Glenn Lake. At this point around 5.1 miles, the trail dumps you onto roads, and the trail loses it's allure. This is where we decided to turn around.
The downhill coming back to Lake George was fun, but it might be challenging for young children.
I wouldn't recommend this trail for young children, but for teens and up it is a nice 10 mile out and back route.
If you are riding from Lake George to the Outlets, the turn-off is well-marked on the trail. But, there is a small stretch (~200 yds) where you have to ride the shoulder of SR149.

Lye Brook Falls Trail

Easy parking, moderate hike, beautiful falls

July, 2016 by ceweakley

I grew up in Southern Vermont but never tried this trail because I didn't have a car when I was a teenager. The hike is a steady and moderate uphill walk on a well maintained trail with roots and rocks underfoot. The trail is well marked and ends at a beautiful natural waterfall — more serene than spectacular. I recommend applying insect spray before you set out because you will be in the woods and near standing water. Good photo opportunity at the end of the trail when you get to the falls. NOTE: you will cross a wide clearing with a rock fall about 100 yards before reaching the falls. Do not mistake this for the end of the trail. Keeping going until you hear water flowing.

Good Reviews

July, 2016 by youker

I had done the two Vermont parts so I wanted to do the New York section starting in Granville. It was every thing the reviews said it would be. My wife drove shuttle so I only had to go one way. It was a bit uphill from NY to Vt. Smooth surface, nicely shaded, no problems. The actual start in Granville is not clear. I started one street connection above the old Depot where there was a sign. The trail continued farther but I did not find a road connection. Youker

Need more trail markers

July, 2016 by flowrcafe

We are in good shape, exercise regularly and had no idea of the difficulty. The path was mostly rocky and seemed all up or down hill, difficult to walk. Took nearly 3 hours round trip and we were not thrilled with the actual falls. People on the trail very friendly and helpful, especially the young woman who helped me cross the water. I am 66 years young and now have sore feet! Glad I finished the hike, thought of quitting several times but my partner never wavered. Would recommend for younger folks than me or those who have move time and can rest along the way.

Scenic trail - Run, Walk or Bike!

May, 2016 by jnunziat

My husband and I regularly run and walk on this beautiful trail. It's especially inviting in the summer with the shady portions providing welcome relief from the heat. The trail is wide enough for couples or small groups to walk side-by-side. The surface is sheer delight for runners and bikers alike. Want to go further? Cross over Bay Road and take the Shelburne Rec Path to continue your journey. Trail is not heavily used, so it's always inviting.
