Prairie Duneland Trail

Bumpy but Nice

April, 2017 by dendodds

I loved being able to ride on a trail and not having to worry about being mowed down by a big old pickup truck. I traveled from the Chesterton Skate Park to Hobart (and back) but unfortunately I was really disappointed by the bumpy ride.. My road bike graciously transmitted every tree root and surface crack directly to me sorry butt. The only smooth section was around Rt 149. There were many stretches were absorbing the bumps didn't allow me to maintain any type of cadence. All that said - I'm feeling fortunate to have the trail available and will definitely be riding there again.

Thorn Creek Trail

great trail

April, 2017 by kuffner

biked the trail Sat 4/8/17. as previously stated, asphalt was in excellent shape, no root bumps or gopher holes. also as stated, trees blocked most of the 15+ mph winds, only a few exposed meadows. should be shaded most of the way during the summer. several parking areas, all w clean port-o-sans. tons of buttercups already up, will ride again this weekend as lots of wildflower habitat that should fill with trilliums and such in the coming weeks. almost no traffic, much better than slogging through the crowds on the lakefront. Glenwood Oaks was a great stop for lunch, and Calumet Bakery for post-ride refuel - grab a nut roll for breakfast. we came from downtown, was a half hour drive to Lansing Woods parking lot at 186th & Torrence. started down the Old Plank Trail but turned back as it was strewn w broken bottles. Thorn Creek is a great trail.

Old Plank Road Trail

My home trail

April, 2017 by rjsobkoviak

I have ridden dozens of rail trails, but this is my home trail and also one of my favorites. The trail rises slightly uphill from the start at Washington Street on the east side of Joliet, and I recommend that as the start. The trail head in Joliet--although not in the best of neighborhoods--has been safe to park in during the day and is maintained by the Will County Forest Preserve as well as policed by them. You will ride under the graffiti riddled Briggs Street overpass and then into wooded areas that take you through Joliet, Cherry Hill and New Lenox. One of the longest sections without crossings is between Schoolhouse Road and 116th in New Lenox--and at the halfway point in this section there is a spur over to Hickory Creek where you can ride lots of hills and fast passes. Frankfort is a great stop and was the halfway point before the trail was extended on the east end. Frankfort is a good place to stop and use the bathroom or drinking fountain or have a snack & water up. After Frankfort you ride through a forested area with a decline and incline. Richton Park takes you over a causeway through a nature preserve and soon thereafter you pass under Interstate 57. There is a gazebo near Cicero Avenue that is a good place to take a break, and the crossing at Cicero winds around in front of a Menards where there is a traffic signal. Next you ride through Park Forest and cross under the Metra (the old Illinois Central) on you way to the previous end point at Western Avenue. There are some cool old train displays in Park Forest. The new section of the trail past Western Avenue takes you about another mile and a half and links up with the Thorn Creek Trail. I am told if you go north you can eventually link up with the Burnham Greenway which takes you to the Lake Front Path, but I have only gone south toward Sauk Woods where there are some great trails to ride through the preserve. On the east end of the trail you can navigate the city streets of Joliet a little more than a mile to the Wauponsee Glacial Trail which takes you all the way south to the Kankakee River. The OPT is a great long ride that has many options on each end.

Erie Lackawanna Trail

Best trail in NW Indiana

February, 2017 by bikenut71

I ride this trail weekly usually from Colfax Rd in Griffith South to Summit street in Crown Point. Pavement is great with some slightly bumpy sections just North of the US 30 underpass. South side of the US 30 under pass collects water during heavy rains and the tunnel can be icy in the winter.

Oak Savannah Trail

Great trail

February, 2017 by bikenut71

I live in Hobart and use this trail on a weekly basis to connect with the Erie Lackawanna trail South to Crown Point. It's a great trail and the tarmac is smooth. There are some heavily wooded areas so you have to watch for sticks after a windy day. On occasion there can be a lot of broken glass through the Gary section under Broadway but recently it hasn't been bad at all.

Erie Lackawanna Trail

Best in the area.

January, 2017 by mbobcek

So nice to have a trail of decent length that goes from a minor city to another. Businesses are in close proximity, periodically throughout the tail. Nice, direct, beautiful.

Outta stater

November, 2016 by cindy.gerner.5

Black Friday and this was a great way to spend it. We started at the northern end just off route 83. Plenty of parking too. The asphalt is in fantastic condition and the trail despite a few busy road crossovers was scenic. What a way to escape the hustle and bustle my husband was thrilled when we came to the bridge built just for pedestrians that crossed over the train tracks. My husband the train nut was excited to get to see the Union Pacific pass under us too. At the southern end we ended up in the Sauk Valley preserve that is a treasure. Great job connecting all the parks and preserves. We could have even ridden the Old Plank Road Trail since we passed right by in Chicago Heights.

Outta Stater

Visiting from PA. We brought our bikes and before Thanksgiving feast set out to get a little exercise. It's great the trail is paved but found it a little too bumpy and the surroundings a little boring. There was hardly a soul out because of the cold weather which made it more enjoyable.

Prairie Duneland Trail

Beautiful Fall Colors

November, 2016 by delchap

Today was my first time at riding this trail. I only went from Chesterton to the Samuelson-Central Avenue location and then back to Chesterton. The fall colors were amazing. There are several Burning Bushes on the route and they are spectacular. I hope the weather holds up so I can make the full ride to Hobart.

Oak Savannah Trail

Nice trail, but...

October, 2016 by xbrymil

I started my trek in Hobart at the trailhead off Hobart Rd. and headed west. This trail has some nice scenery with a mixture of forest, prairie and neighborhoods. We detoured a bit in downtown Hobart. Along the river there is a great park and you can ride a path along the river front. Very nice. Back to the Oak Savannah trail. The trail is in good condition. Asphalt is always a treat. As other riders have pointed out, there are some stretches where not everyone would feel safe. By my estimate, it is about a two mile stretch. Nowadays, there is so much tension that I found myself watching my surroundings much more than I normally would. Although I never felt threatened, I was on higher alert. So, it is unlikely I will return to the trail as when I am out for a bike ride, I do not want to have to waste energy having to be overly aware of my surroundings. As others have pointed out, this is a personal matter and some may not be at all concerned. If you don't think the above would be an issue for you, the trail is very nice so give it a try.
