Hennepin Canal Parkway

Nice ride along Hennepin feeder canal

September, 2017 by hilbertdr

We rode from the trail head at Lock 22 (where CR 300E crosses the canal) up along the feeder canal for about 14 miles. The trail was in good shape for most of the way, mostly paved, and it was enjoyable ride. North of the Rte 92 crossing the trail quality deteriorated markedly and it was single track dirt through weeds and grass. We turned around at Osage Rd because of the trail condition. We tried riding west from Lock 22 but gave up after a little over a mail. It wasn't that bad but it was single track through recently mowed but still pretty high grass.

The first thirteen mile north along the feeder canal was a beautiful fun ride with good trail conditions, nice scenery, and a herons, turtles and jumping fish. We also saw very few other people on the ride. North of that and west of Lock 22 the trail was passable but less fun.

We ride hybrids with pretty wide tires. I'm not sure any of it would be fun on a road bike.

Hennepin Canal Parkway

Nice easygoing trail for a newbie like me. Stayed at Hickory Grove Campground (great new owners) then early morning ride. Crushed stone & asphalt a little overgrown on the edges but a great trail

Hennepin Canal Parkway

Hennepin East from Tiskilwa to Bureau Junction

July, 2017 by jdunsing1

I was on a two day ride from Kewanee, IL to Morris, IL yesterday and today (about 90 miles). I had hoped to ride as much of the Hennepin and Illinois and Michigan Canal trails as possible (I had expected to ride about 50-60 miles on trails split between those two trails). I attempted to ride both trails and have submitted a separate review of the I&M Canal trail.

I only rode about 6 miles of the Hennepin Trail from Tiskilwa towards Bureau Junction (West to east). It was a disappointment. As others have written, it was rough, with some sections of old, failing asphalt. I was not in a hurry, so stuck it out for as long as I felt comfortable. It's just not conducive to a fun ride. Too rough, changing paths from side to side, and just not a fun trail to be on. If you're going in this direction, I would advise taking the adjacent road. I was on it for a considerable time one I got off of the trail and never felt unsafe with cars or trucks.

The trail was disappointing.

Cedar Valley Nature Trail

Evansdale to La Porte City

July, 2017 by emilyprochaska11

I headed south from Evansdale toward La Porte City. It's a good trail in the fact that it's flat so I didn't have to struggle with lots of hills like some other trails around the Cedar Valley. However there is a part of the trail closer to Evansdale that is gone in which you have to take your bike on a little dirt path to continue riding. There is also a bridge out closer to La Porte City. I hope they plan on fixing these issues so that the trail is in better shape.

Heritage Trail (IA)

World Class Trail

July, 2017 by rodmatthews77

I'm spoiled. This trail is about 2 miles from my home. I ride it every chance I get. Scenery is varied and beautiful, the trail is maintained well, and I have seen a variety of wildlife on my rides. By the way, the trail connects with a trail that goes through Dubuque and down to the Mighty Mississippi River..

Heritage Trail (IA)

Great Trail! One of my favorites in the Coulees of the Missisippi.

June, 2017 by dean.smith_tl

We rode this trail (with our trailer and little dog). Great surface. Great ride. Incredible scenery. I appreciate having the signs along the way about the history of the railroad and the area. It was interesting seeing the Sundown Ski area from the other side of the river. This is probably our third favorite rail trail after route of the Hiawatha and trail of the Coeur d'Alenes and one of the best the mid-western trails.

River front Trail & mississippi trail

February, 2017 by twotrikes

Ride the Iowa trail to Lindsey Park in Davenport, and take water taxi to Illinois. There ride the Mississippi trail west to Sunset park or east to Savanna Illinois, about 70 miles. There are 3 campgrounds on the Illinois side.
The water taxi is seasonal and daily pass ($) available.
An alternate crossing is the bridge at the Rock Island Arsenal. (HELMETS ARE REQUIRED at Arsenal)

Grant Wood Trail (Linn County Segment)

Rustic, quiet, partially abandoned, still enjoyable !

January, 2017 by sneaky pete

You may not want to try this on a narrow-tired road bike, the surface is largely either turf, sand, or rocky turf :)

The Westernmost segment is about 3.2 miles long, somewhere in the middle there is maybe 50-75 yards of boggy (wet) grass from a spring, your tires may cut in a little.

It's about .7 miles of surface roads to the Center segment, which is about 2.3 miles long.

The Easternmost segment appears to have been abandoned. The TrailLink map shows the West end of this segment beginning at Alderman Rd, but, I don't think that the trail is accessible there unless you ride a fat bike and enjoy serious boon-docking. There -is- access to the Easternmost segment at Linn Grove Rd, (about 3.3 miles of Gravel roads from the East end of the Center segment), but, it's only passable going East, and then only for about .25 miles of nearly knee-high grass, until it dead-ends into a fence.

Heritage Trail (IA)

Our absolute favorite trail in Iowa.

November, 2016 by mummer005

Iowas great secret! We went to "destination trail" in Minnesota the week before our 1st visit to Heritage Trail and I was afraid of being underwhelmed by a nearby Iowa trail.Wrong! This the Root River Trail, just on a smaller scale. It is a beautiful, scenic, historic trail and such a magical place.Durango is a great starting place going in either direction.A must do in our state!

Grant Wood Trail (Linn County Segment)

A different kind of ride.

November, 2016 by mummer005

A great trail if you want to try a more primitive bike ride.I used a mountain bike and glad I did. This is mostly a grass trail with a gravel rut to run on,I saw a few walkers with dogs but no other bikers. It has great potential! Rode 1st 2 segments starting from Highway 13 going east and ran out time as I averaged about 8 mph because it's a little slower going.A cool change of pace from the normal Cedar Rapids paved trails!

Cedar Valley Nature Trail

Cedar Valley Trail

October, 2016 by trailsguy88

This is a great trail for novice riders, or those getting into shape. It's an old rail trail, so it's flat. It's very scenic and a nice ride. There is trail damage from a recent flood and a section near Waterloo is completely washed out. It's closed there, but you can get through if you can carry your bike. I did almost 27 miles and greatly enjoyed it!
